Acts 17 (Click title for audio access)
"A Tale Of Three Cities"  •  10.30.11  •  Sunday Morning Service, Calvary Christian Fellowship

Intro.
- In Charles Dickens' famous novel "A Tale Of Two Cities," the famous opening line "It was the best of times and it was the worst of times," would be appropriate for our section today.
- In our chapter today, "A Tale Of THREE Cities" it was the best of times for those in these ancient European cities. The gospel was marching forward. Gentiles everywhere were getting saved!
- For the gospel's greatest ambassador the cost for their best times, were cause for some of his worst times. He's been kicked out and just plain kicked, yet he has pressed on!
- In these three cities, the Holy Spirit gives insight into the work of His Word, which commonly invokes responses that we need to be ready to respond to. We'll begin in Thessalonica.
Text
•  Acts 17:1-4  :  "Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, 'This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.' And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas."  : The Apostles stayed near the coast of the Aegean sea, traveling over a 100 miles to get to Thessalonica.
- The Via Egnatia led right into Thessalonica, which was a prosperous city due to it being the headquarters for the Roman navy.
- Like any city serving as a naval center, there was a large group of men coming and going, making it a thriving town and an excellent city for ministry.
- Paul figured that if the gospel could be established there, the church would then reach into the smaller cities of Amphipolis and Appolonia.
- As was his custom, Paul focused his attention on the local synagogue. As a certified former Rabbi, Paul would have been an exciting Sabbath morning guest.
- Luke writes this to demonstrate that in spite of growing opposition, Paul worked hard to bring the gospel to the Jews first, to whom the promises of Messiah belonged! This wasn't hit and miss.
- Paul spent three Sabbaths reasoning in the synagogue. We get our  word "dialgoue" from the word that Luke uses here. Paul met the Thessalonians in a thought for thought running dialogue.
- Paul answered their thoughts and questions with thoughts that came from the scriptures. The Old Testament was the basis for Paul's authority. For every question there was a scripture.
- We may not have the acumen that Paul had, but we should strive to understand the scripture with as much passion as we have, paying attention to understanding God's Word in it's context.
- Why? For our own trivial mastery? Not at all! We need to have a good reason for our belief and a good for others to believe as well! It's not enough to say, "I believe."
- We need to be careful of the words "I believe." We are not authorities in and of ourselves.
- We need to commit ourselves to the phrase, "God's word says." If we do not know, then we need to commit to that answer, with the caveat, "But I will know soon when I've looked at the Word."
- The subject of their dialogue revolved around the Messiah. Paul in his response to their questions took pains to explain and demonstrate that the Christ had to suffer and rise from death.
- People have real struggles with belief and they need real answers from scriptures.
- I have told you often of the vigor that many Jews had taken to memorizing blocks of scripture. It was equally true that many of them simply held their favorite verses to be dear.
- A significant problem for the Jewish people revolved around the concept of Messianic prophecies relating to suffering, as well as to resurrection. How could Christ both suffer and reign?
- Paul set out to answer this by explanation, literally "opening their minds" and demonstration meaning to set something before them, akin to setting a table.
- He was exposing them to scriptures and setting the table for their discussion with scriptural evidence that demanded their attention.
- The Old Testament spoke of Christ's need to suffer and to rise from the dead. Many of these prophecies are very specific in nature, including details that weren't even practiced when written.
- There are over 300 specific prophecies that Jesus fulfilled in His life. For those on our mailing list, I will be sending those out this week, so that you will have them.
- Over time, Luke tells us that these people were persuaded, because of their study of scripture, to trust in Jesus, who they trusted as the one who had fulfilled those prophecies.
- This is often the case with gospel ministry. It takes time, patiently availing ourselves to answering questions, presenting thoughts that scripture presents against dissenting thoughts.
- This was the case in Thessalonica. Over time, some were persuaded to believe.
•  Acts 17:5-9  :  "But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, 'These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. Jason has harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king—Jesus.' And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things. So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go."  : Then there were those who were not persuaded. This is the less attractive, but realistic part of the ministry of the gospel.
- The word "not persuaded" here comes from the word that we get "apathetic" from. This word refers to somebody who will not allow themselves to believe. They could see, but refused to believe!
- You need to recognize and respect that there are some who refuse to believe.
- When Paul came into these synagogues, that the Jews had spent significant time and energy in evangelism. When the people believed Paul's message, they were watching their work fizzle!
- Their jealousy caused them to consort with what the NLT terms them "troublemakers."
- It's interesting the bedfellows that are made from being an enemy of the gospel! These Jews would likely have otherwise ignored these men, but here, they are partners together!
- The crowd was disturbed, which may not have been that hard to do in a Naval town! This led to an all out assault against the house that housed the weekly church meetings, the house of Jason.
- Whoever Jason was his home had become a hub for the church in Thessalonica, well known even to this mob who were looking for Paul and Silas.
- Listen to what they said of them: "These who have turned the world upside down." What an amazing statement! Let it be said of us!
- The gospel turns the world upside down! You will share it and even in an apathetic environment, you are turning someone's world upside down!
- Jason believed he was practicing hospitality. The world called it "harboring" the church! Most other translations have this as received, which was contrary to Roman decree.
- Only Caesar was to be accepted as King. The Christians held to the real King.
- They brought the brothers into jail and then released them when they had provided sufficient funds to be bailed out. This brings us to our second city, Berea.
•  Acts 17:10-12  :  "Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men."  :  The Thessalonican believers knew that the mob would be back for Paul and Silas, so they sent them away in haste through the night.
- Berea, known today as Verria, was 55 miles away. Upon arrival they went into the synagogue. Same custom, similar audience, but very different mentality.
- The people that they were speaking to were different than the Thessalonicans. They were more "fair-minded." These Bereans were noble minded.
- What made them this way? They received the word with all readiness. They took in the word with a zeal for it. They wanted God's Word.
- Where Paul had done the work for the Thessalonicans, the Bereans did the work for Paul!
- When Paul broke open the scrolls, they were ready with pen in hand, eager to hear from God. They were intentional about coming to ingest the word. But it did not end there.
- They left the service and searched through the scriptures to confirm what Paul had said. Every day, they investigated, pointing to a judicial search and interrogated. This was Bible CSI!
- I imagine them going home with their notes and cross referencing scriptures on their own time. When they came across a difficulty, they came to Paul and interrogated him.
- This zeal and thirst for knowledge made them a noble minded congregation. I would pray that that Berean spirit would invade our church. Lord, make us hungry for your Word!
- In this group, in this fertile environment, many believed, among them Greeks and prominent women, the word referrring to elegant, infuential women, and men of the same caliber.
•  Acts 17:13-15  :  "But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds. Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there. So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed." : In a world without the internet, the Thessalonicans discovered that Paul was preaching in Berea! Their envy brought them over 100 miles to stir up trouble.
- Paul left Silas and Timothy there to continue the work that had been started, faked toward the sea, but went down to our third city, Athens, alone.
•  Acts 17:16-21  :  "Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols. Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there. Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, 'What does this babbler want to say?' Others said, 'He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,' because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection. And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, 'May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak? For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.' For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing."  :  Paul's time in Athens spurred an exasperated spirit when he looked around and saw the idolatry of that city.
- If Rome was the military center of the world, Athens was it's intellectual counterpart.
- Paul again went into the synogogues to meet with those who believed in the One true God! Even here when the city was fully pagan, Paul first sought out the Jews. He was committed to them!
- He dialogued with the church and in the marketplace. It isn't long before he met up with these Philosophers who lived in Athens.
- Epicureans believed that pleasure was the greatest good, while the Stoics believed that keeping their emotions at bay was the way in which to live.
- The people who heard Paul listened, but with very different responses. Some called Paul a "vain babbler" referring to a seed picker or beggar, who grabbed attention from any who would give it.
- Others spoke about his content, being the Lord and His resurrection. The Athenians just heard it as another interesting topic! They heard this as they heard any new thing!
- Their response to this was much like any intellectual group today, who love to hear any new stimulating puzzle. Some people today just like something new to think about or figure out.
- This group invited Paul to the Aeropagus, Mars Hill, to speak to the audience.
•  Acts 17:22,23  :  "Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, 'Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:" :  Paul's first statement was that it was obvious that they were very religious. In our vernacular today, one might say, "I see you're spiritual!"
- Here's a lesson for us: If being religious, spiritual or devout was enough, then Paul would have left the Athenians alone!  Religion is not enough and is indeed a blasphemy against God.
- Any system that proposes a way for man to get to God, by Man's invention, is an insult and no matter how devout or noble it seems, it is an ultimate tragedy in it's nothingness!
- They were religious, but they were divorced from the life of God, even if they built a statue to honor the one that they did not know.
•  Acts 17:24-28  :  "God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’"  :  Paul begins with the beginning. The God that they do not know is the one that created everything and is bigger than their temples!
- God wanted their hearts and their beings, not some temple offering. God made all of the earth and God made each of them! He gave them their dwelling places so that they would seek Him.
- He makes one of the most amazing statements in scripture. In Him, all live and move and have their being! As humans, we are made in His image!
- Epimenides, one of the contemporary Athenian poets, had spoken of humanity's roots in God. Paul is affirming that truth.
•  Acts 17:29-31  :  "Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead."  :  Paul's argument is that they were all complex living beings. If we are like that, how much higher and how much more is the God that made us.
- These gods that were in Athens were gold, silver and stone, all thought up by men and all made in his image! Before Jesus came to this Earth, God allowed this ignorance.
- God allowed them to live in their thinking, but now that Christ had come and become the Savior of all men, there was now a command to repent.
- That Savior that would bring them to salvation, would be a judge that would condemn them in their unbelief. That God proved when He raised Christ from the dead.
•  Acts 17:32-34  :  "And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, 'We will hear you again on this matter.' So Paul departed from among them. However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them."  :  The resurrection from the dead became the dividing issue. Some heard it and mocked.
- "How could you believe in something so ridiculous!? Who has ever been raised from death?"
- There will be some in your life who will mock you in the same way. No matter how reasonable you are, no matter how solid your scriptural point, they will mock what they refuse to believe.
- Others reacted with a desire to hear it again. "That was really interesting. I'd be interested in listening again." The gospel demands a response, not a repeat performance!
- The Gospel is not some new puzzle to figure out. It is an invitation to life with God, demanding more than mental assent and understanding.
- Preaching is meant to evoke a decision about Christ, not tickle ears and entertain!
- Paul left them, but when he left, there were two that followed after him. Dionysius was from that very area, in fact being one of the judges who governed what was heard at Mars Hill.
- This woman, likely a woman of ill-repute named Damaris also believed, as well as others.
Conclusion
- The Gospel is hard work. It requires patience and a commitment to His Word. Some will exasperate you, some will encourage you and others will just be entertained by you!
- But in each city, Paul's journey teaches us one thing: When there is much planted, some will produce!
- This week, if you share something, something MIGHT come. If you share nothing, nothing WILL come!

Thursday Night Bible Study

Leviticus 19-Leviticus 20 (Click title for audio access)
"The Exercise Of Holiness"  •  10.27.11  •  Thursday Night Bible Study, Calvary Christian Fellowship

Intro.
- Leviticus 19 continues with the Lord's directive toward a moral life that would be proper for His people. Some of what we read may seem like common sense today. It was not common then.
- We have had the benefit of thousands of years of Biblical instruction, even living in a country that was founded on Biblical principles. These Israelis were pioneers.
- They were being prepared by God to walk into a land corrupted in an unprecedented way.
- God's prescription to heal the land from it's corruption is a people who will be like He is. Holy. God's expectation for the people was the expression of holiness and here is how it would work out.
I. Holiness Towards The Lord (19 v.1-8)
II. Holiness Towards Neighbors (19 v.9-22)
III. Holiness Towards Wickedness (19 v.23-20:27)
Text
I. Holiness Towards The Lord (19 v.1-8)
•  Leviticus 19:1-8  :  "And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God. Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves molded gods: I am the Lord your God. And if you offer a sacrifice of a peace offering to the Lord, you shall offer it of your own free will. It shall be eaten the same day you offer it, and on the next day. And if any remains until the third day, it shall be burned in the fire. And if it is eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination. It shall not be accepted. Therefore everyone who eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned the hallowed offering of the Lord; and that person shall be cut off from his people.'"  : God will for you. Be holy, because He is holy. Holiness does not refer to sinless perfection. It does not refer to angelic disposition.
- It means that you are set apart, wholly belonging to Him, reserving yourself completely and exclusively for His use! You might say that you want to be holy. Where does God begin to train us?
- Holiness does not begin in public, where the world can see. It begins in the home. It's practiced under your familiy's roof.
- He begins in the home, with the first authority of our lives. He tells the children of Israel that they were to revere their parents, meaning that they were to respect them.
- There is no qualifying statement, ie. "Respect them if you want or if they are respectable."
- When you live under their roof, it's a desire to live peaceably and in an orderly fashion, obeying them. When not under their roof, remain open to them so that they can speak into your life.
- When it comes time to care for them, do so as unto the Lord and with what means you have.
- Second, they were to keep His Sabbaths. The Sabbath was a private matter as well. Don't do work on that day. Hold on and make sure that you obey His command to rest.
- We are not under Sabbath law, but we are to fully rest in Christ for our completed salvation. God put His stamp on this. He is the Lord! Are you at rest in what Christ has done for you?
- God continues by telling them not to turn to idols. Idolatry was rampant in Canaan and a very real temptation. Beware of your heart's desire to turn toward idols. We have to be careful as well.
- Your worship shall not be forced. It must be voluntary, an expression of your love the Lord. Notice that God talks specifically about the peace offering. This was the offering of fellowship.
- Holiness begins with a private walk with God, consistently in fellowship with Him.
- For the people of Israel, they were to literally eat of the fellowship offering or be cut off. You and I have no such offering to literally eat of, but without fellowship, how can we say we have life?
II. Holiness Towards Neighbors (19 v.9-22)
•  Leviticus 19:9-18  :  "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the Lord your God. You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord. You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning. You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shall fear your God: I am the Lord. You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor. You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord. You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord."  :  Proper worship of the Lord leads to proper treatment of our neighbors. After each of these commands, you'll notice the phrase "I am the Lord your God." That happens 15 times in this chapter!
- God is saying, "What I have just said matters to me. What I have just said is endorsed as My plan for your life." He begins with the treatment of the poor and the stranger.
- God has a heart for those less fortunate than ourselves and He wants us to share in that.
- Israel would not have fields for many years to come, but when they did, they were to reap from every place except for the corners. These were to be left for those who would happen by.
- Notice that they were not instructed to bag the fruit and deliver it. They were to leave the corners unpicked, so that those that were poor could come and gather their own food.
- For those that they would live near, they were to be honest and honorable with one another. Honest in telling the truth to a neighbor and honorable in paying out wages to those who worked.
- Let the day laborer go home with the wages that he had earned that day. Don't withhold it!
- Be careful how you treat the vulnerable. Be fair, not giving partiality to them simply because they are poor, nor on account of their riches. Judge righteously!
- He tells them that they are not to be talebearers, slanderers or gossips against one another. What a good word for us today. Slander is a serious evil to the Lord.
˚ "How can you tell the difference between gossip and legitimate prayer requests? Do you lower your voice? Do you allow yourself to be used as a source?"             Skip Heitzig
- Slander is the beginning, then comes the legal desire for revenge in falsely testifying against him, looking for vengeance, bearing a grudge. None of that is appropriate for God's people.
- He tells them, look to love your neighbor as yourself! Instead of slander, speak the truth of their goodness. Stand beside them and help them when they are in trouble. This is God's heart!
- Now, if you have something against a brother, rebuke him. Tell him, but don't hold it in!
•  Leviticus 19:19  :  "You shall keep My statutes. You shall not let your livestock breed with another kind. You shall not sow your field with mixed seed. Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you."  : God gives them illustrations that will help them to cement the concept of holiness.
- One breed of animal must mate with it's own kind, not with another. The field would have one seed at a time. The garment was to be totally line or totally wool.
- These illustrated the need for holiness among the people of God. They were to be whole, complete, not mixed in any way.
•  Leviticus 19:20-22  :  "Whoever lies carnally with a woman who is betrothed to a man as a concubine, and who has not at all been redeemed nor given her freedom, for this there shall be scourging; but they shall not be put to death, because she was not free. And he shall bring his trespass offering to the Lord, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, a ram as a trespass offering. The priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the Lord for his sin which he has committed. And the sin which he has committed shall be forgiven him."  : Women had very little in the way of rights of equality in ancient times.
- A woman without a family was forced into this type of formal relationship, whereby she belonged to another man in a binding relationship, which would serve to create more children.
- If a man took interest in such a woman, God is saying that this man should be ready to take responsibility for his relations with her, otherwise, face a scourging.
- There would be scourging for both, but the man would be responsible to bring the offering for forgiveness. This was a sin against the man and the woman. He was held responsible in their society.
III. Holiness Towards Wickedness (19 v.23-20:27)
•  Leviticus 19:23-30  :  "When you come into the land, and have planted all kinds of trees for food, then you shall count their fruit as uncircumcised. Three years it shall be as uncircumcised to you. It shall not be eaten. But in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, a praise to the Lord. And in the fifth year you may eat its fruit, that it may yield to you its increase: I am the Lord your God. You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying. You shall not shave around the sides of your head, nor shall you disfigure the edges of your beard. You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord. Do not prostitute your daughter, to cause her to be a harlot, lest the land fall into harlotry, and the land become full of wickedness. You shall keep My Sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary: I am the Lord."  :  God decreed that in the first four years of their being in the land, they were to take to planting trees for food, but not take from the land until the 5th year in.
- The land was sick and the fruit was to be considered uncircumcised.
- In the fourth year, that fruit belonged to the Lord. He had brought them out and He was deserving of receiving the first fruits.
- As new inhabitants of the land, they were to remain distinctive, not allowing even the hint of compromise with the world.
- They were not to eat anything that was not properly bled. The life was in the blood and they were to respect that. They were to steer clear of anything having to do with the occult.
- Today, you would not find a person of God seeking to know their future through palm or tarot card readers or through astrological charts.
- They were not to bear marks that would cause confusion, even looking outwardly distinctive!
- In those days, those who were involved in cultic practices shaved in odd ways and cut themselves in odd ways. Tattoos in that day were a sign of cultic practice.
- The principle today is simple: Don't even dress in a mannner that would cause people to wonder about your allegiances lie!
- Some might be tempted to think that this was not that bad. We could check out the palm reader just for fun! God says that this is what made the land full of wickedness!
•  Leviticus 19:31-37  :  "Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God. You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the Lord. And if a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him. The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. You shall do no injustice in judgment, in measurement of length, weight, or volume. You shall have honest scales, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe all My statutes and all My judgments, and perform them: I am the Lord."  :  When the people came into the land, they were to be free from the problems that plagued the Canaanites.
- They were to go away from mediums or arts that considered the dead. They were to be a society of honor for their elders. They were to be built on hospitality toward strangers.
- They were to be honest in all of their dealings. The land was to be one of love for God and for the people that would encounter the land.
•  Leviticus 20:1-9  :  "Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 'Again, you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘Whoever of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who gives any of his descendants to Molech, he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones. I will set My face against that man, and will cut him off from his people, because he has given some of his descendants to Molech, to defile My sanctuary and profane My holy name. And if the people of the land should in any way hide their eyes from the man, when he gives some of his descendants to Molech, and they do not kill him, then I will set My face against that man and against his family; and I will cut him off from his people, and all who prostitute themselves with him to commit harlotry with Molech. And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the Lord your God. And you shall keep My statutes, and perform them: I am the Lord who sanctifies you. For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him."  :  God speaks severely toward His covenant people regarding the idolatry, especially toward Molech, whose worship demanded human sacrifice.
- To be involved in such a deity would insure that God would rise to defend the sacrificed baby and turn Himself against them. Notice that God's people are also called to responsibility.
- The people are not to hide their eyes from their brother or sister's sins. They were to be held accountable to act in a punitive way toward that person. Death was the sentence.
- How serious does God take idolatry and dishonoring their parents? Death was the sentence!
- God calls them to a holiness that demands responsibility toward what He hates! We are vehicles that God uses to bring about His will on Earth.
•  Leviticus 20:11,12-21 : "The man who lies with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall surely be put to death. They have committed perversion. Their blood shall be upon them."  :  As we look at these verses, they represent God's sentence upon what He clearly laid out for us in chapter 18.
- As a result, we'll suffice it to say that in a theocracy, much of what is readily accepted and celebrated in the world in terms of sexual ethics, is condemned and cause for death.
- Lying with a step-mother brings death. Sex with a daughter-in-law: Death!
- Their guilt wiill be theirs to bear. Verse 13, God says homosexuality is worthy of death. Verse 14 tells us that polygamy would be the cause for burning, some believe with a mark of some sort.
- In verse 15, bestiality warranted the death penalty for the man and the animal, as well as verse 16 in the case of the woman. Think this is something ancient?
- Three days ago, in the New York area, a new proposal for sex education currciulum reportedly to include information regarding sex with animals![i] God help us!
- Verse 17 covers the condemnation of sexual relations between siblings. Sex during a woman's period was condemned by God in verse 18.
- A person who would do this was willing to say of God's command, "Who cares what He says?" Someone who is holy is going to say, "I care what He says!"
- Verses 19-21 covers relations with an aunt or a brother's wife. They would not die, but their lines would not continue. They would die without children, a major curse in that day.
•  Leviticus 20:22-27  :  "You shall therefore keep all My statutes and all My judgments, and perform them, that the land where I am bringing you to dwell may not vomit you out. And you shall not walk in the statutes of the nation which I am casting out before you; for they commit all these things, and therefore I abhor them. But I have said to you, 'You shall inherit their land, and I will give it to you to possess, a land flowing with milk and honey.' I am the Lord your God, who has separated you from the peoples. You shall therefore distinguish between clean animals and unclean, between unclean birds and clean, and you shall not make yourselves abominable by beast or by bird, or by any kind of living thing that creeps on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean. And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine. A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them.’"  :  All of these things that God calls them to do were in direct opposition to that which God hated! God justly hated the sins of the Canaanites.
- He hated their injustice, idolatry, sexual perversion, cruelty. Everything that they did was abominable to Him, therefore, God hated them! But the Israeli's had a chance to turn things around.
- In all that God instructed them, it was for the purpose of keeping them separate and clean. What for? Why is it so important? Consider this: God was destroying a group of nations for their sin.
- It was sin that was chosen, practiced and perfected. The Israelis were just as capable of the same sinful activities. If they went down this road, they also would be wiped out.
- If that happened, God's plan of redemption for the sin of the world would be wiped out with them! The people that were to bring the Messiah into existence, would themselves no longer exist.
- This brings it to our level. We exist to perpetuate that thread of redemption.
- Our lives represent redemptive value, so God would warn us, to be holy, different, so as not to ruin the redemptive plan that He intends to bring from our lives.
Conclusion
- God tells us to be holy, not because it's His preference, but because it's His person! He is holy and we are to reflect His values. It begins at home, in private.
- Are you wholly His when you are alone? Amongst your family? Consider that this week. Are you holy towards those that come into contact with you? Are you fair, honest and loving toward them?
- Are you holy in your attitudes towards that which God deems to be wicked? Does your voting record reflect His values? Do you oppose what He opposes?
- Let it be said of us, that we strive to be holy as He is holy!

Sunday Morning Service

Acts 16:16-40 (Click title for audio access)
"The Power Of Joy."  •  10.20.11  •  Sunday Morning Service, Calvary Christian Fellowship

Intro.
- When the people of Israel returned from Babylon and had finished their work in rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, the first thing that they did was to sit together to read the law.
- The people heard Ezra the scribe give a sermon, which caused them to weep. But this was a day of celebration and Nehemiah said to them, "Don't sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!"[i]
- We are looking at Paul's second missionary journey, which has brought the gospel to the continent of Europe, where God has begun a work in the life of a Greek merchant named Lydia.
- The rest of this chapter will provide us with a great study on the power of Christian joy and why it is indeed, the believer's strength. In this passage, we'll see
I. Joy Tested (v.16-24)
II. Joy Revealed (v.25-30)
III. Joy Triumphant (v.31-40)
Text
I. Joy Tested (v.16-24)
•  Acts 16:16  :  "Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling."  :  The Apostles were on their way to prayer, which was likely at the Gangitis River where they had met Lydia. It's been a week or two since coming to Philippi.
- As we mentioned last week, Lydia was a rich merchant of Thyatiran purple clothing. She was an entrepeneur, confident and successful. What a contrast to this other girl.
- Going to prayer, the Apostles were interrupted by a slave girl, to say the least, the other side of the spectrum She "met" them, a word indicative of a hostile military greeting.
- She was more than a certain damsel. She was a military attache for the Kingdom of Satan!
- This girl, either in her teens or just prior to it, was not a neutral person, but was demon possessed, having, literally a Python Spirit.
- This is a reference to a culturally understood Greek myth called the "Oracle Of Delphi."
˚  "This was a shrine in Northern Greece where the gods could be petitioned, and was guarded by Python, a female serpent. Her priestess, called Pythia, was a middle aged woman who descended to an underground chamber and sat on a three-legged stool over a chasm in the earth. After chewing laurel leaves (containing small amounts of an hallucinogenic substance), she entered into a trance-like state, so that the oracle spoke through her. Her voice changed, and the message sometimes had to be interpreted by another medium." [ii]
- Later this word would be used to describe ventriloquism. Like any spiritist, medium, or tarot card reader today, this girl had become a channel that demons used to communicate.
- In using this word to describe her possession, I believe that Luke is telling us that this young girl would have been acting like this because she had been exposed to illicit substances.
- Drugs opened the door for demonic entities to enter her life and to speak through her! It's likely that her masters made sure that she had more than enough of whatever she needed!
- What a sad state that this young girl was in. When you and I think about missions and reaching people for Christ, we often think of fully grown people who have plotted their own course.
- However, let us remember that in this world there are children, abandoned or neglected by parents, who have been victimized by the world around them. They need a Savior. We have one!
- Unlike Timothy, this girl had not been raised above her circumstances, but was a victim of exploitation. Child porn, human trafficking and international kidnapping are just a few modes today.
- This girl was "employed" by local merchants who made use of her ties to the demon world. She spoke as a local oracle, sort of akin to a modern day palm reader or an astrologer.
- Her masters cruelly paraded her around, calling out to the marketplace to bring their attention to the "prophecies" that she would make.
- This brought a tremendous amount of money into their pockets, forget the fact that this girl was constantly and miserably tormented by the demons that invaded her life.
•  Acts 16:17,18  :  "This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, 'These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.' And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, 'I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.' And he came out that very hour."  :  This girl was part of a calculated plan of the enemy to harass and annoy Paul's team. When she was not following Paul, she followed one of the others.
- When Luke uses the word "cried out," that describes the cackling sound of a raven.
- She croaked out, like a raven, the truth of the situation, which the enemy is happy to use. A little bit of truth, combined with malicious intent and the insertion of any lie possible.
- Paul and his team were servants of God and they were on a mission to give bring salvation. She spoke the truth to a degree, but in a manner that was a major annoyance to the Apostle.
- This girl represents the first test of joy that any believer experiences. A grievous person.
- This word "greatly annoyed" is widely translated. It has been translated "grieved," "distressed" and "troubled."
- Paul was worked up, strenuously exercising restraint every time he saw her! When she saw them, she would begin cackling and he would become irritated. Ever met a person like this?'
- They test our joy, but that was not all that grieved Paul. He knew that in confronting her, he would be opening a proverbial can of worms, and likely ending his tenure in this city.
- That is the second test of our joy: Circumstances that require our action. Wrongs that must be made right, despite the cost.
- After several days of this, he finally took charge of the situation. Paul commanded the Spirit to come out of her and that Spirit did! Nothing more is said of this woman. Was she saved?
- Some would say, "She was dealing with Paul. She had to get saved!" Others take the opposite tact, saying that if she did get saved, then the record might have shown it.
- I'm going to tell you that I want to believe that she was, so I'll leave it there!
•  Acts 16:19-24  :  "But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities. And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, 'These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.' Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks."  : Her Masters did not see that this demon possessed girl was now free from oppression. They were not happy for the girl whose life was saved but at the profit that was lost!
- That is the heartbeat of the world around us! Worldly friends love you when they see a "hope of profit" coming from your life. When that dries up, you'll never hear from them again!
- This story is reminiscent of the Gadarene Demoniac that Jesus healed. When Jesus sent those demons into the pigs, the pig famers asked Jesus to leave! What a sad commentary!
- In the same way, these merchants brought these men before the authorities charging them with insurrection. "These Jews teach customs which are not lawful for us."
- Here is the third test of joy that they faced: Unfair, unrighteous accusations!
- Notice that they are assumed to be Jews and that there is definite Anti-Semitic tone. Fairly soon, one of the Roman emperors will expel the Jews from the land.
- What customs were they referring to? It's likely that in preaching Christ, lifting up His name, that they understood that if Christ was God, then Caesar could not be.
- To worship Christ was to repudiate Caesar or any other god for that matter! By the way, that is true: Jesus can not be added to your personal pantheon! He sits on the throne alone or not at all!
- When the merchants made their case, the Apostles were publicly beaten. Remember how the Jews gave 39 lashes? The Romans had no such mercy law! They could lash until they were tired! - This is the fourth test of their joy: Undeserved punishment! After that beating, they were thrown into prison for safe keeping!
- He made sure that the prisoners were kept in the lowest part of the prison, with their feet tied to stocks, or leg irons, designed to hold the legs in thoroughly uncomfortable conditions.
- Which test will you be facing this week? Grievous people? Circumstances that you will need to stand up in? Unrighteous accusations? Undeserved punishment? These are the tests of your joy.
- Let's see how the Apostles did.
II. Joy Revealed (v.25-30)
•  Acts 16:25  :  "But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them."  : These Apostles have been dragged through town by hostile Philippians.
- They have been arrested on false pretenses. They have been beaten. They are in the lowest cell with no credible hope of escape. What were they doing? They were praying and singing!
- Here they were in the darkest part of the evening, feet in stocks. Paul and Silas were there, it seems alone. Luke and Timothy were seemingly outside of the prison.
- These men teach us a valuable lesson about joy in the Lord being their strength. It's no wonder that the book of Philippians is known as the book of joy!
- Here is the subjective outworking of joy. The world sees men praying and singing when they should be whining and wailing! That is the visible aspect of joy. Graciousness. Warmth. Happiness.
- The prisoners were listening to them. They were taking note of the difference heard in their voices! A Christian should consistently be looking to effuse joy. If not, it's time to pray!
- They were able to pray and sing because they knew the outcome, which is the objective portion of joy. They belonged to the Lord and He was there with them!
- They reasoned thusly: "The worst that could happen is that we'll die and go to heaven!" What can you do to a person who has anchored their soul to a place that only death can reveal!?
- Joy in the Lord is our strength because there is nothing that the world can do to take it from us! It is a settled condition! These "prisoners" could not have been more free!
- In your darkest moments, what does the world around you hear and see? I pray that you and I would commit ourselves to walking in the Spirit, so that we might show His joy!
•  Acts 16:26 : "Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were loosed." : It turns out that Greece is a very active seismic region, the Greek islands existing over fault lines that run in all kinds of directions.
- Additionally, there are several volcanoes nearby, like Nysiros, which is currently overdue for a major eruption! Throughout Greek history there have been major seismic events.
- The foundations were overthrown, doors were opened and the chains were loosed. How did that happen? It's likely that the stones that the chains were attached to were broken as they moved.
- Some of this can be naturally explained, but understand that this is also God, who makes things that shouldn't happen, happen!
- There is a beautiful devotional moment here: Men and women of God are loosed from that which binds them, when they are free to choose worship! Think about that!
•  Acts 16:27-30  :  "And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, 'Do yourself no harm, for we are all here.' Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. And he brought them out and said, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'"  :  This warden was my kind of guy! It seems that he slept through the earthquake!
- When he woke up, probably due to the noise and clamor of others, he saw through the moonlight from the newly renovated prision, that the doors were open. Bad news!
- We have noted before that a Roman prison authority was to stand at his post and make sure that his prisoners were served their justice.
- To fail meant that he would face the punishment for their crimes, ie. death! He immediately and instictively decided that suicide was a better option than the cruelty of Roman homicide!
- Here is the antithesis of joy. This man's life was wrapped up in his position and what came of it. Was he a success or not? Would he be approved by those in his life or not?
- When your life is tied up in what cannot be controlled, then you will be free, but in real chains!
- Paul called out to stop the man. Each of the prisoners had stayed right where Paul was. When he realized that Paul had control of the situation, he fell down trembling before them.
- This is probably the only case in history when it was preferred that the inmates run the prison!
- Notice that this jailer quickly came to a place of surrender. What happened? When a person surrenders to the Lord, there has been an introduction of gnawing circumstances.
- All of a sudden, everywhere that person looks there is a Christian. He turns the radio on and finds a Christian talking. The same with other media. Before long, it's more than a coincidence.
- Incidently, here is another reason that you should be looking for opportunities to share your faith. You might be God's latest introduction to the topic in that person's life!
- If gnawing circumstance won't work, there is always overwhelming stimuli! God cares enough about a person's life to allow some rain to fall.
- Whatever it is that God chooses to allow, it hits that person where they live! If they live for finances, the finances will be depleted. If it's about their possessions, all of a sudden there is a loss.
- In the case of the Philippian jailer, the gnawing circumstance were these joyful apostles that stood in stark contrast to their fellow inmates. That had to eat at him.
- Why are they like this!? Why does it seem so real to me right now? Everyone is listening to them, ie. they've gained an audience. Folks, your joy on display is a mighty apologetic!
- The earthquake was the overwhelming stimulus drawing the man to conclude that his life was over. When he saw that the prisoners were all there at Paul's request, this drew him to God!
- The earthquake had shaken the city and his prison, but God had shaken the man's soul!
- Before Paul could start any presentation. "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" Consider something here. This jailer was in control just minutes ago.
- As the jailer, he had acted proudly, ordering people around, having his way with any of the prisoners. Now, he is facing a crisis and he needs someone else to give him peace.
- His mortality was right before his eyes and all his control was gone. Where did he go? Who did he consult? Who had the answers when the time came? The man of God!
- If anything, pray that God would be merciful enough to break down every control which keeps a person from ever asking the question! This man was there: What must I do to be saved?
- What will you answer when you hear the question? Think about it. Put yourself in their shoes. Let's get their answer and compare!
III. Joy Triumphant (v.31-40)
•  Acts 16:31-34  :  "So they said, 'Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.' Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.'"  : The triumph of Christian joy is to see enemies converted into family and circumstances turned for the good!
- Paul and Silas tag teamed, confirming each other's words that belief on the Lord Jesus Christ was essential.
- We have talked about true belief, so I will not beat that dead horse. I will say that the type of belief that the Bible speaks of will change a destiny!
- It's not just his own destiny, but that of his entire household! He would be saved and so would they! Were they advocating that he could get saved for all of them?
- What Paul is saying is this: "If you and any of your family believes upon Christ, they will be saved." The offer extended to them as well as to the Philippian Jailer.
- He had come to them in humility and proved his conversion by his immediacy. That same hour, he took them and washed their stripes.
- He heard the word of the Lord and began to right the wrongs that he had committed against the Apostles, cleaning them up and taking care of the wounds that were inflicted upon them by him.
- The whole family was baptized and they rejoiced. They all believed in Jesus.
•  Acts 16:35-40  :  "And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, 'Let those men go.' So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, 'The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace.'  But Paul said to them, 'They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out.' And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city. So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed."  :  The officials who imprisoned the Apostles had done so in order to ease the tensions of the merchants and to keep the men "safe" though they treated them roughly.
- When the Philippian jailer relayed the news, Paul would not have it. He threw out his Roman citizenship and demanded that they be treated better!
- You will recall that while Paul was a Jewish man, he had grown up in Tarsus and was therefore a Roman citizen. A citizen of Rome was not to be treated in the way that Paul was.
- This set off a wave of deep concern for the city officials who did not know that these men were Roman citizens! They could lose their positions over this!
- When Paul and Silas received the treatment that they did at the hands of the people, they did not seek to insulate themselves from being maltreated on account of Christ.
- Now, they demanded their rights after all of it was done. Why was that? Why now?
- I believe there are two reasons: First, this was the only leverage that they had and Paul wanted to use it to minister to the people who had abused him. He wanted to see them saved.
- They were not just misguided religious nuts from Jerusalem. They were Roman citizens, with some degree of pedigree. Maybe that would help the Magistrates listen.
- On the other hand, Paul might have invoked his citizenship on behalf of the church, knowing that these officials would think twice when treating any more Christians the same way.
- In the end, they just wanted them out! Paul and Silas stopped by Lydia's, said goodbye and moved on.
Conclusion
- The joy of the Lord is your strength. That will be tested this week through grievous people, circumstances that require action, unfair accusations, or undeserved punishment.
- One of these will be your squeeze. What will come out? Will there be singing and praying or weeping, wailing and complaining? It's not joy unless it's the former!
- But here is what we hold onto: Maybe this week our joy will be made full! Maybe this person will be added to our family when they face a personal earthquake!
- The joy we allow the Lord to display today gives us the privilege of being the one to share in that day. Let's pray!
