Thursday Night Bible Study

Service (Click on "Service" for audio access)
"How Shall We Then Live"  •  1.26.12  •  Thursday Night Bible Study, Calvary Christian Fellowship

Intro.
- When a person comes to Christ, for a time, they are infants spiritually, constantly in need of food and dependant entirely on others to help bring them along. For a time, that's appropriate.
- Over time, a supernatural thing begins to occur: The spiritual baby becomes a maturing believer ready to contribute, hungry for responsibility, looking to exercise their faith!
- He or she goes from being a constant consumer to a full blown participant! God's Word is implanted, the seed has found good ground, and now, the overwhelming concern is fruitfulness.
- The maturing believer goes from asking, "I wonder what I'll learn today," and begins to ask, "I wonder how God will use what I have learned to bless others today!"
- In this final part of this set of studies, I want to direct our attention to what the Bible tells us about service and how that topic might be different than we think.
Text
- First, we need to recognize that all service is the natural outflow of worship. Turn with me to Romans 12. This is an especially famous verse and one that gets us on the right track.
•  Romans 12:1 :  "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service."  :  "Beseech" is an old world meaning to "appeal." Paul is making an impassioned plea to his audience, based on all the riches of their salvation.
- God has taken our filth and given us His perfection to wear. He has saved us from our sins, solely by His sweet grace. With this as the context, Paul appeals to believers.
- In light of all this mercy, it's right for you to present, to place your bodies at the disposal of the Lord. The sense is, "Lord, do with me as you wish!" You have given your all, now I give my all!
- In this way, the person is a living sacrfice, holy, set apart because of what Jesus has done for them, and viable in the hands of God. This Paul says is their logical, sacred service.
- The ESV translates "reasonable service," as "your spiritual worship." We worship the Lord, we respond rightly to His mercy by seeking to serve Him.
- When we serve, it comes not as a debt that is owed, but as a loving response for what God has done for us! That makes sense doesn't it?
- In the world, you hear of people who give to charities that they once found themselves beneficiaries of.
- In the same way, having received the grace and mercy of the Lord, you are overjoyed at the thought of serving Him! When you come to that understanding, you enter a wonderful fellowship.
- Every great person of the faith that has ever lived, has simply been a servant of God! You are a servant of God's right now. Perhaps you are still in training, but you are a servant nonetheless!
- Paul calls himself a "bondservant" or "bondslave" of God. (Romans 1:1, Philippians 1:1, Titus 1:1) James, Peter and Jude refer to themselves this way (James 1:1, II Peter 1:1, Jude 1).
- This was not false humility on their parts. This was their reality. They considered themselves willing, voluntary servants of Jesus Christ, carrying out His work with all of their lives.
- Think of yourself as an extension of Him. To the person needing wisdom, you are an extension of His wisdom. To one needing a touch, you are the extension of His hands.
- Turn over to Philippians 4. In the world, being someone's servant is considered a lowly or humiliating thing. God shows us that in His Kingdom, it is the servant who is lifted up!
- Paul, in seeking an illustration to demonstrate that truth, points to Jesus, who became the picture, the paradigm of the believer.
•  Philippians 2:5-8  :  "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." : We examined this passage in detail recently, but I draw your attention to it again, as being a servant in God's Kingdom is the highest and greatest occupation that any Christian person could ever have!
- Jesus became a servant in every way. Like Jesus, you and I are lifted up by God when we take ourselves down a notch!
- Turn to Mark 9. The Lord's disciples believed that they would be the greatest in God's Kingdom AFTER Jesus of course, and even argued amongst themselves about it.
•  Mark 9:33-35  :  "Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, 'What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?' But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest. And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, 'If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.'"  :  God desires that we serve Him by serving one another. That is how we serve Him, being a servant of all.
- God has always had this planned for you! This was His intention in saving you!
- Turn over to Ephesians 2. Paul speaks in a similar vein here in Ephesians. First, there is salvation and then there is work to be done.
•  Ephesians 2:8-10  :  "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."  :  You are God's masterpiece, His poem! He created you in Christ Jesus in order that you might express good works!
- You did not do good works to be saved or to earn His grace. Grace is received. Once grace is received, God opens the door for good works that He always had in mind for you.
- I have often put it like this: Faith is the root and works are the fruit!
- As a group, the church is designed by God to be a "good working" organism. The first of those works is the declaration of the full counsel of God, in teaching the Word of God.
- Paul calls the assembly of believers the "church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth!" (I Timothy 3:15) The church is meant to proclaim all of God's counsel for men.
- The second of those good works is evangelism, declaring God's word of salvation to every tribe, tongue and people.
- That is the role of the church in the world, the good works that God prepared in advance for us as a church to do. This is what we walk or set ourselves in.
- Take a moment of practical application here. Wherever you go, you represent God, as His servant, and the church.
- Therefore, in your neighborhood, at your job, wherever they know your name, you are called to represent His interests and act as a representative of our church.
- If you are surrounded by a bunch of heathens, you are called to evangelize. This will take various forms, all of which we have seen in the book of Acts.
- There will be long conversations that endure throughout the week, where you will answer thought for thought. Other times, you will present information, teaching CDs or DVDs.
- Perhaps, in a desire to minister the gospel, you do so by looking to practically assist someone, all with the hope of speaking forth the gospel.
- Ultimately, you will invite those people to come to church with you, perhaps even picking them up from their homes!
- Do not believe for a second that you are not called to evangelize because you are not an evangelist! Paul told Timothy to "do the work of an evangelist." (II Timothy 4:5)
- We do not need to be evangelists to do the work of one, namely evangelizing!
- On the other hand, you may be surrounded by other Christians. At that point, you are one who adds to the teaching of God's Word, bringing scripture to bear on various topics.
- Your work place, neighborhood or local hangout is either a nesting ground for new believers or a place of encouragement for fellow believers!
- In these ways, you perform the work of the church microcosmically! By doing this, you begin to understand what church and the teaching of God's word is for in the first place!
- It is the place where you are equipped for every good work that God has you to perform! These are the works that you are called to perform in the world, but what about the church?
- God's people do good works towards those in need within the body, looking around always for opportunities to serve each other.
•  Galatians 6:9,10  :  "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith." : Note the word "especially" is not the word "exclusively!"
- Sometimes it's a meal for a person who is hurting. Sometimes it's a prayer for a brother or sister in need. Sometimes it's offering people a job or keeping an ear open for others who need one.
- We are meant to serve the Lord by serving one another. Usually, one only needs to open their eyes and look around, and God will direct you to the nearest need.
- We are to present our bodies to him and we were created in Christ Jesus for good works. Beyond these general things, what does God specifically want me to do?
- Here again is a wonderfully broad topic that every new believer and many old ones tend to spend their lives working out. Let me assure you now: God will work it out in your life!
- As much as He has been sovereign in your salvation, He will be just as gracious and powerful to move you into the position that He wants you to operate in.
- In speaking toward what capacity you might be useful to the Lord in, it's of paramount importance that we discuss the contents of I Corinthians 12.
- The scripture asserts that God has given each of His people, the body of Christ, gifts for service. They are what they sound like: Received operations of grace for service to the body.
•  I Corinthians 12:4-11  :  "There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills."  :  Within the church, there exists certain gifts that God has given to each of us. The Spirit gives them and God is the Lord of them.
- Let that hold your heart as you consider this topic. Gifts are a sovereign work and are nothing apart from the Spirit who gives them and the God who chooses to use them in you.
- As the Trinity involves itself in this enterprise, we also understand that there are diversities of gifts or varieties of graces. There are differences of ministries or varieties of the works.
- Paul is saying that these gifts will work out in your life in a unique way as you are unique! God is woking, Paul asserts in all of His people, for the profit of all!
- Your gift is meant to encourage and bless all. It is not meant to be a glory for you. At this point, Paul gives a few examples of the gifts that he has in mind.
- He begins with the word of wisdom and related to it, the word of knowledge.
- One speaks to intelligence given that comes from God's Word, the other an insight that cannot be known except by God's revealing.
- Paul then speaks of faith and gifts of healing. Faith being the ability to believe God in a given situation, for His work and healings for cooperation with Him in bringing a supernatural touch.
- From there the working of miracles and prophecy. Miraculous signs were given in the early church to authenticate their message.
- Prophecy could be considered forthtelling, or speaking to something yet future and unknown or it can be speaking of God's Word, the latter being the predominant case.
- God's spirit has given His body the discerning of spirits, a check in the spirit to confirm or deny something. I call it "God's Sensitivity Detector."
- Finally, Paul talks to the Corinthians about tongues and the interpretation of tongues.
- Today, tongues are often uttered in prayer meetings and people have interpreted by praying and agreeing together.
- These are gifts that we employ in serving one another. They come from the Lord and are for the benefit of His body, God giving them to His believers as He desires.
- God looks at us and says, "This person is in the position to use this gift and it won't puff them up! They'll use it in the right way and when they do it will bring joy to them and glory to me!"
- Through the rest of I Corinthians 12, Paul illustrates how necessary the use of these gifts are for the church. It's akin to a part of the body not cooperating with the rest of the body.
- You not using your gifting, Paul says, is like your arm refusing to work because it doesn't get to see, or your eyes refusing to see because it can't throw!
- Without you employing the gifts that you have or living as the gift that you are the church becomes a place of dysfunction. Paul closes things up in verse 27 and following, when he says:
•  I Corinthians 12:27-31 : "Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way." : Turn now to Romans 12. Paul includes another list of gifts.
•  Romans 12:3-8 : "For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness." : Note again that Paul is reminding us that gifting is to be received humbly and used with humility so as to bless the body.
- Our gifts are not hammers, they're chisels, to be used for gentle work among each other.
- Additionally, Paul let's us know that it's our responsibility to allow them to function within the church for the body of Christ, because we are in Christ together.
- Because each individual is different and each individual group of believers is different, God places gifts within the body that minister appropriately there in that local church expression.
- Paul repeats the gift of prophecy, which here is the teaching of God's Word, bringing forth it's meaning for the congregation.
- He adds the term "ministry," meaning service. Teaching, which means instruction in the things of God. Exhortation being encouragement to live in what has been taught.
- Giving from the spirit refers to resource, either financially or with wisdom. It's from the spirit when it is is given with liberality.
- Leading refers to adminisration and getting things done logistically for the meeting of the body and mercy refers to those with an eye toward those who are suffering within the body.
- Now, with this quick summary as our background, think of these scenarios that may give you a sense of what gift you may possess.
- When you walk into a group of people, what is it that you perceive? What are your first thoughts? Perhaps you see one who is alone and you want them to feel included. That's mercy.
- Perhaps you feel that there is time that is wasting and you have the urge to gather people for prayer, knowing that God is about to do something. That is leading.
- By the end of the service, you have heard that someone is struggling with something personal and you want to encourage them in the word. That is exhortation and prophecy.
- At the same time, you see a bunch of work that needs to be done at the end of the service, so you jump right in and ask, "How can I help?" That's the gift of...HELPS!!
- As we close, you might be wondering what gifts you have and how they might begin to manifest. You might ask, do I just start doing something?
- The answer is yes! Be involved. Church is where you practice for the mission field that is your job, your neighborhood, your family! Think of it as a launching point, but not the only point.
- One of the major mistakes that people make and I am wanting desperately to avoid this, is to consider ministry, service or serving as something to compartmentalize.
- I serve God at church, but that's all. Or, just as bad, I serve God at home. Either way, we have missed the point. We are full time, full life servants!
- For each person, your service to God will be made clear to you by the priorities that you already have. For example, you belong to Christ and your first ministry is to Him.
- if you are married, your second ministry priority is your spouse. If you have children, that is your next priority. Then comes the job that God has placed you in.
- Because each of these is God given, ministering and serving these ministries is of the greatest importance. When all of that is in balance, find how you can minister within the church!
- The healthiest person is the one who has learned how to minister to the Lord. The healthiest couple are the couples that learn to minister together.
- The healthiest family is the family devoted to God! The healthiest churches are those filled with people who live their priorities rightly.
- The church will always have need, but will also always have God's provision! It's His church you know! For those with those right priorities consider these thoughts.
- Whatever God is going to make you, you won't see the end at the beginning! Let me give you two examples. Stephen and Phillip were both men of great renown in the scripture.
- Stephen was a mighty preacher and Phillip was a great evangelist. That's how they ended up. Where did they start? They were busboys in the early church!
- Think of Gideon in the Old Testament, who defeated the Midianite army with 300 men in a mighty route. Before he could be that, God got his feet wet by having him destroy his Father's idol.
- God gave him a baby step and he took it. Wherever you are, look around and whatever takes all your faith to do, do that first!
Conclusion
- Service is not something that is confined to the walls of the church. Service is a lifetime commitment to Christ, to express Him to every person you come into contact with!
- Start where you are and watch what God makes you!

Thursday Night Bible Study

Scripture (Click "scripture" for audio access)
"The Bible"  •  1.19.12  •  Thursday Night Bible Study, Calvary Christian Fellowship

Intro.
- Last week, looking at the wonderful doctrine of Salvation, I quoted or referenced 18 passages from the Bible. With seven pages of text, those passages comprised more than half of my message.
- Frankly, I could have quoted double that amount and only scratched the surface!
- On an average Thursday or Sunday, our goal as a fellowship is to spend the majority of our time studying passages from the Bible, to the tune of 35-45 verses at a setting.
- The Bible is the center of Calvary Christian Fellowship and is indeed the center of all Christian life. Let me give you a few facts about the Bible that you hold in your hands.
- The earliest chapters were penned in 1500B.C. by Moses, the final chapters written by the Apostle John in 100A.D.
- In between, 38 different authors penned various books over 1600 years. Some books were written by Kings, some by peasants, some by doctors and some by fishermen!
- Books were written during times of war and peace. Some were written at the height of joy and celebration, while others were written in times of unbelieveable despair.
- Among the 66 books of the bible, there are about 8,000 predictive prophecies, of which 3,268 have been fulfilled, the rest are currently unfulfilled.
- The Bible is universally accepted as the bestselling book of all time which is fitting considering that it was the first book ever printed by Gutenberg in 1456 in Germany.
- Most best seller lists assume that the Bible is the best selling book and gives the next best selling book. Really, #1 is actually #2! Here's a staggering quote for you.
˚  "...as of 2007 approximately 7.5 billion Bibles have been distributed throughout world—with the vast majority still available for use! And these figures do not include the various digital versions of the Bible being used today by millions on computers, Blackberries and iPhones. Currently, the complete Bible has been published in over 450 languages. Consider what this means....With the world’s population approaching six billion, there is approximately one Bible for every living person on Earth!"[i]
- That quote deals with the Bible as books and on mobile devices. Think about other mediums that have been employed to promote the bible, ie, movies, dramas, etc.
- Truly, we are talking about a staggering amount of Biblical information in the world today.
- Sadly, if 90% of humanity owns a Bible, it's been said that only 20% actually read it! Some of that can be owned by the fact that there are people who own Bibles who are not saved.
- Some have a very difficult time getting through certain books of the Bible and quit. Some of this has to do with our country's ADHD, which is fueled by a massive entertainment industry.
- That all being said, to someone who belongs to Christ finds the Bible indispensable! Every Christian knows that this book will radically transform any life that will submit to it!
- With that as our introduction, we'll begin with what the Bible is. Please turn to Genesis 1.
Text
•  Genesis 1:1-4  :  "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light." : Two things stand out immediately on the very first page of scripture. First, take note of where it begins: The Beginning!
- The first chapter of Genesis involves a period of time devoid of human observation. God began to create on this planet earth before anything was in place or anyone was around to view it.
- The Creation Epic is just one of dozens of stories that take place outside of human experience, some which occur in heaven, some before Earth was created and some in the future.
- For example, Satan's inquiry into the life of Job, (Job 1) Satan's fall, (Ezekiel 28) the Counsel of the Trinity before Babel (Genesis 11), and any communication about hell or heaven.
- As a result, the Bible, fundamentally speaking, is revelation from God. He is revealing His acts, His character and the basis of His requirements for relationship.
- Apart from the Bible, we would know nothing about any of these essential topics!
- This first verse reveals to us the power of God over His creation, and the power which brings things to form where there was once nothing!
- This first verse reveals to us that God is the one creating, the Spirit of God is hovering and it's revealed in John 1:3 and Colossians 1:16, that Jesus was involved in the creation of the world.
- Imagine what we would "know" if God did not reveal Himself? How could we know anything about Him? We would have a designed planetary system, but not a person to attribute it to!
- The system itself general revelation of God, which speaks clearly (Psalm 19:1) being that design presupposes a designer, but to know the One who designed it requires "special revelation."
- God is transcendant, dwelling outside of the system that He created for human beings, far beyond our ability to comprehend Him.
- Turn over to Isaiah 55. Listen to the words of God that He speaks in this regard.
•  Isaiah 55:8,9  :  "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,' says the Lord. 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. " :  The revelatory nature of God's Word opens that door wide for us. One of the first methods of His revealing Himself is found in Isaiah 55:8 and here in Genesis 1:4: "Then God said."
- The God of the Bible speaks! He is not silent, but chooses to communicate verbally. In the case of Genesis 1:4, God issues a decree and what He desires is accomplished.
- But it is telling that He speaks and men were recipients of His direct communication! How does this work? Turn over to II Timothy 3. Paul tells Timothy about the necessity of scripture.
•  II Timothy 3:16,17 :  "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." :  The word "inspiration" is what is important here. It literally means "God breathed!" The word "scripture" comes from the word "graphe" meaning, that which is written.
- That which was written was breathed out by God employing human authors. Let's take a look at another verse in II Peter 1.
•  II Peter 1:19-21  :  "And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit." :These two sets of verses speak to the process that scholars call "Verbal Plenary Inspiration."
˚  "Verbal Plenary Inspiration' means 'God the Holy Spirit so supernaturally directed the human writers of Scripture that, without waiving their intelligence, their individuality, their personal feelings, their literary style, or any other human factor of expression, His Complete and Coherent Message to mankind was recorded with perfect accuracy in the original languages of Scripture: the very words bearing the Authority of Divine Authorship."[ii]
- What you have in front of you was penned by human beings, but the heart and content of the message therein finds it's origin in the Divine Being! Scripture is inspired by God.
- Turn to Jeremiah 1. Jeremiah is worried about speaking. Here is one good example of God's promise to speak through His prophets.
•  Jeremiah 1:7-9  :  "But the Lord said to me: 'Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’  For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of their faces, For I am with you to deliver you,' says the Lord. Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me: Behold, I have put My words in your mouth. See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms, To root out and to pull down, To destroy and to throw down, To build and to plant.'" : Aside from that which was spoken and then written down, God also wrote things down Himself, such as the first copy of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 31:18)!
- Whatever God inspired and had written down through human vehicles, we as Christians today claim that to be inerrant, in terms of the original documents.
˚  "Inerrancy, or infallibility, means that when all the facts are known, the Bible, in the original autographs, when properly interpreted, will prove itself to be without error in all matters that it covers. These include areas of theology, history, science, and all other disciplines of knowledge."[iii]             Don Stewart
- God is a communicator and it's obvious that the Bible claims His authorship. How can we be assured that we have a reliable copy today?
- The Bible that you hold today is based on copies of original documents. How can we know that the copies are not wrong? The answer is astounding.
- There are over 14,000 copies of the Old Testament and there are over 5,000 copies of the New Testament. That is an overwhelming amount.
- Just by way of comparison, Tacitus was a popular historian who lived during the New Testament era. His history, which I will quote from on occasion, has only 20 copies in existence!
- Those copies were made 1,000 years after he wrote his history. By comparison, the Bible has 20,000 copies, some of those copies date from just about 30 years after Christ!
- We owe much to the scribes who took extreme measures to copy from scroll to scroll. Jeremiah 8:8 mentions the scribes, literally the counters, who counted every letter on every scroll!
˚  "Before he began his work each day, the scribe would test his reed pen by dipping it in ink and writing the name Amalek, then crossing it out (cf. Deut. 25:19). Then he would say, 'I am writing the Torah in the name of its sanctity and the name of God in its sanctity.' The scribe would read a sentence in the manuscript he was copying, repeat it aloud, and then write it. Each time he came to the name of God, he would say, 'I am writing the name of God for the holiness of His name.' If he made an error in writing God's name, he had to destroy the entire sheet of papyrus or vellum that he was using. After the scribe finished copying a particular book, he would count all of the words and letters it contained. Then he checked this tally against the count for the manuscript that he was copying. He counted the number of times a particular word occurred in the book, and he noted the middle word and the middle letter in the book, comparing all of these with his original. By making these careful checks, he hoped to avoid any scribal errors."[iv]
- Of the 20,000 copies, there is a uniformity that is undeniable! There are so few deviations, among that size of a group, one can only deduce the authority. Listen to this quote from Ron Rhodes.
˚  "In the many thousands of manuscript copies we possess of the New Testament, scholars have discovered that there are some 150,000 "variants."This may seem like a staggering figure to the uninformed mind. But to those who study the issue, the numbers are not so damning as it may initially appear. Indeed, a look at the hard evidence shows that the New Testament manuscripts are amazingly accurate and trustworthy. To begin, we must emphasize that out of these 150,000 variants, 99 percent hold virtually no significance whatsoever. Many of these variants simply involve a missing letter in a word; some involve reversing the order of two words (such as 'Christ Jesus' instead of 'Jesus Christ'); some may involve the absence of one or more insignificant words. Really, when all the facts are put on the table, only about 50 of the variants have any real significance - and even then, no doctrine of the Christian faith or any moral commandment is effected by them. For more than ninety-nine percent of the cases the original text can be reconstructed to a practical certainty. Even in the few cases where some perplexity remains, this does not impinge on the meaning of Scripture to the point of clouding a tenet of the faith or a mandate of life."[v]
- Jesus said, and I'm not sure how one can miss this truth, that He came to fulfill the law and not one jot or one tittle would pass before all was fulfilled! (Matthew 5:18)
- Our next question concerns the scope of that communication. What should the Bible contain? What do we consider scripture and why?
- Christian bibles contain the Old Testament and the New Testament. Catholic Bibles include what is called the Apocrypha. Why are they not the same?
- Turn over to Luke 11. Jesus is in the middle of rebuking the Pharisees for their hypocrisy.
•  Luke 11:47-51  :  "Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. Therefore the wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation." : What does this have to do with the Canon? The stories of Abel and Zechariah cover the Old Testament as we have it today! Jesus affirms it's authority.
- Additionally, Jesus affirms certain stories within the Old Testament as having factually taken place, quoting various scriptures.
- Jesus believed in the creation epic (Mark 13:19), as well as the historicity of Adam (Matthew 19:4). Jesus believed in Noah's flood (Matthew 24:37-39) and in Jonah's fish! (Matthew 12:40)!
- Jesus believed in the serpent that was lifted up in the wilderness (John 3:14) as well as the manna that God gave to them during their wandering (John 6:32).
- Jesus quotes scripture, attributing the quotes to Mosaic authorship (Matthew 8:4, 19:8).
- There are many more things that we can point to, the last of which I will save for the next section, but suffice it to say, if there is a better authority than Jesus, I can't think of who it is!
- As for the Apocrypha, with the exception of the Book Of Enoch potentially quoted in the book of Jude, there is no mention whatsoever, of any book, in any of the New Testament books.
- Old Testament authority is well documented, but what about the New? For the answer to that question, turn over to II Peter 3. Peter is telling the Christians about how they should live.
•  II Peter 3:14-16  :  "Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures." :  Peter affirms Paul's writing to have the same authority as the Old Testament, calling Paul's writing scripture! The Apostles brought forth the testimony given to them by Jesus Himself!
•  Hebrews 1:1,2  :  "God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;"
•  I John 1:1-4  :  "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us—that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full." :  At this point, one might say, "How can we trust the Apostles?" To that I will simply answer this: Would you die for a lie?
- Each Apostle died a martyr's death, some in a very violent way.
- Peter and his brother Andrew were both crucified, Peter upside down, Andrew on an X.
- John was marooned on Patmos after surviving being boiled in oil. His brother James was thrown off of the highest point of the temple, lived and then was beaten to death.
- Mark was dragged through Alexandria by horses until he died! Bartholomew was flayed to death by a whip. Thomas was speared in India, Jude was killed by arrows.
- Barnabas was stoned and then beheaded. James, Matthias and Paul were all also beheaded! Not one died of natural causes. Not one died recanting their faith!
- We've looked at what the Bible is, a revelation of God regarding His character and works, and we've examined the basis of our trust in the finished product.
- We would be remiss if we did not now finish with what the point of the Bible is! It's not enough to know about God. God intends that we know Him through the scriptures, being led to His Son.
- Turn over to Luke 24. Jesus has risen from death and is now visiting with two depressed disciples who have not yet believed the report. How did Jesus encourage them?
•  Luke 24:25-27  :  "Then He said to them, 'O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?' And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself."  : The entirety of the Bible is meant to teach us about Jesus! The Old Testament presents Him in picture, the New Testament in person.
- The Bible is meant to lead you to understand, submit to and love Jesus Christ. Then, the Bible becomes your standard for behavior in this world!
- We have already looked at II Timothy 3, but listen again to what the Bible is good for. It's profitable for "doctrine" that is, what you believe about God.
- For "reproof" or a standard of measurement. The Bible is to be used for correction, or for restoring something to a straight standing position.
- Finally, for the believer, the Bible is useful for instruction in righteousness being the tutor that God has left us to teach us how to live like He did!
Conclusion
- Tonight, if you are a new Christian, start reading the Bible beginning in Mark and start getting to Bible study as often as you can to pick up the rest.
- If you are an older Christian, make a practice of reading through the Bible at least once a year and once you have done that, go back and look at major sections or great chapters.
- The Bible is our greatest gift from the Lord and our only weapon against the Devil and our flesh! (Matthew 4:1-11 & Ephesians 6:10-17)

Salvation (Click "Salvation" for audio access)
"Foundations, Part One"  •  1.8.12  •  Sunday Morning Service, Calvary Christian Fellowship

Intro.
- To speak about the topic of salvation, one would not be guilty of overstating if they said that this was the single greatest topic that the world has ever known, if only for the terms involved.
- The term "salvation," If you looked it up in the dictionary, will read something along this line: "the act of saving or protecting from harm, risk, loss, destruction, etc."
- When a Christian uses the term salvation, there are definite nuances that need to be acknowledged, in terms of what the Christian Bible says.
- To a Christian, salvation is God's rescue mission that He accomplishes on behalf of His people. Salvation, at least in the most basic of terms, is one part deliverance and one part reward.
• Colossians 1:11b-14 (NLT)  :  "May you be filled with joy, always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins."
- Salvation means first, that a person is delivered from their sins, which we will discuss in a moment. Second, salvation points to a reward that is yet future to us, even beyond this life.
- We have these two poles dealing with our past and our future, yet salvation is also about this present moment and what it is effecting in you.
- Tonight, I want to delve into this topic. I can only pray that after this study, you will have the beginnings of a firm grasp of what God's salvation means.
- We'll begin with the question, "Why is it that we need salvation?"
Text
- We need salvation, simply because we are all infected with something the Bible calls "sin."
˚  "Sin is any failure to conform to the moral law of God in act, attitude, or nature. Sin is here defined in relation to God and his moral law. Sin includes not only individual acts such as stealing or lying or committing murder, but also attitudes that are contrary to the attitudes God requires of us."       Wayne Grudem
- Sin, the word, refers literally to "missing the mark," a term borrowed from the world of archery. The mark, the standard that God sets for His people is perfection. Anyone perfect!?
- You can turn in your Bibles to Romans 3 and the author will explain just how bad it is.
•  Romans 3:10-13 & 23  :  "As it is written:  'There is none righteous, no, not one; There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.' Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit'... For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." :  "All have sinned." "There are none righteous." "There are none who seeks after God!" This is fairly simple to comprehend: Humanity, before God, is in a bad way.
- We could categorically say that salvation is necessary because entrance into eternal relationship with Christ requires something that we do not possess: Righteousness!
 - Sin is not just a mistake that one makes or a moral failure, though both are expressions of sin. Sin refers to what we are intrinsically.
- The bible tells us that because of sin, prior to salvation, we are God's enemies, at war with Him, openly hostile toward God. (Romans 5:6-11.)
- When a sinful nature expresses itself that action is offensive to God, who is completely holy.
- You might not consider yourself rebellious, but consider this: I am telling you that God in the scriptures tells you that you must submit yourself to Him in order to be saved. How do you respond?
- That immediate impulse to fight and say, "I don't need to do anything different!" is the innate sin nature rearing it's ugly head.
- You inherited a sinful nature from your parents, you have nurtured a sinful life prior to Christ and you will pass it on to your children whether you have been saved or not!
- There are no exceptions. Sure, one might be a greater sinner than another, in terms of what we are able to observe in this world.
- A murderer in our society is considered on another level than a man or woman who has a problem with coveting. However, each sinner, once all of the externals are stripped away, is a rebel.
- Herein lies the crux of the problem: Man is hopelessly enslaved to sin and God cannot allow sin or unrighteousness to exist in His holy presence.
- God hates sin because it by it's very nature, represents everything that God opposes. God brings life, sin brings death (Romans 6:23) .
- God demands holiness, sin caters to that which is unholy and unrighteous in this world.
- God wants to rule the heart of mankind, but sin is the slave master controller.
- God's hatred of sin then will one day be fully expressed in His wrath against those who allow sin to be their master for life, as he allows unrepentant sinners to experience His holy wrath forever.
- Turn to Romans 1. If there was ever a doubt regarding God's feelings about sin, this chapter provides a fully orbed picture of God's emotions. Lacking for time, let me highlight.
•  Romans 1:18,24,26, 28-32  :  "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 28-32 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them." :That is the problem. That is why we need a Deliverer. At this point, all religious systems devise a way for self-salvation, either through works of the law or church traditions of men.
- However, a cursory glance at God's law reveals to us the impossibility of keeping it! God's law was never meant to save. It was meant to expose. It is meant to show you that you your need.
- When I have talked with people in the streets, I have taken them through 2 or 3 key commandments found in Exodus 20 and all are exposed right there.
- This method, as far as I am aware, was demonstrated to me via Ray Comfort's classic work "Hell's Best Kept Secret" which I wholeheartedly recommend.
- I begin by asking that person if they have ever lied. Most will admit after prodding that they have. Next, I move onto stealing.
- Most deny that they've stolen anything, but I remind them of their recent admission that they have lied in the past!
- From there I move onto murder and finally adultery, both of which are heart attitudes according to Jesus Christ in the Sermon on The Mount.
- By this time a person is fairly convinced that they are lying, thieving, murderers and adulterers! Looking at the mirror of the law produces shame and a certain sense of dread.
- Why? Because the law is unforgiving. You cannot flatter yourself when you look at reality and the reality is a stark contrast to what you had believed about yourself just seconds before.
- Usually, that person acknowledges that they are indeed sinners. For some, it's a stark revelation, to others, what was once a hint is now clearly defineable.
- I then ask them, "If I held you by a ten link chain over the grand canyon, how man would you want to break? Most realize that the law broken at one point, damns them before God.
- Keeping the law won't do it. Working to balance your good and bad works won't do it!
- Only Christianity points exclusively to faith in Christ! Christians believe that salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone!
- Now, this naturally leads us to "What must a person do to be saved?" God has determined the terms for surrender. He calls men, women and children everywhere to believe upon Jesus Christ.
- Consider these verses that are essential for understanding this truth.
•  Acts 4:10-12  :  "let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’ Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.'"
•  John 3:16  :  "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
- God calls you and I to believe in His Son, the representation of righteousness, the Holy One, who died on your behalf, was buried and was then resurrected, ascending to the Father 40 days later.
- As we have noted in Acts 4:12, the name of Jesus Christ, the representative from God the Father, God the Son, died because of your sins.
- All of the wrath that the sins committed by God's people for all time, has been absorbed in Jesus Christ. For those who have trusted in Christ, God has no more wrath for their sins.
- Turn if you will, to I John 2. This verse is critical in understanding what the cross means.
•  I John 2:1,2  :  "My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world." : Jesus Christ lived a perfect life according to God's law so that God might treat you as though you lived His life! When Jesus took your wrath, you received His righteousness! Turn over to Romans 4. Listen to what your faith in Christ accomplishes.
•  Romans 4:4-8  :  "Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, 6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: 'Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.'"
- His righteous clothes were put upon you! You were at that point, declared righteous before God! He died to take your sins and that His righteousness might be accounted to you!
- He raised from death so that the world would know who He was. He ascended to the Father to stand as our Advocate, our lawyer.
- The sense is that Jesus stands there to defend us, pointing to Himself, saying of Himself, "I have satisfied the Holy wrath of God for them because they have believed!"
- These are gospel events that Christians believe. But how do you know that you have believed? What are standard signs that you have believed.
- First, in your heart and mind, you have fully trusted God regarding what He has said about Jesus. You acknowledge it's truth mentally.
- Perhaps you began to believe when someone witnessed to you or you heard a message on television. At some point, you believed God.
- Second, in your actions and speech, you have turned or repented from anything that you already know displeases God.
- If you believe in Christ, you have already begun to turn away from sin, knowing that it's not something that will help you to love God!
- Third, in your desires and appetites, there is a need to feed! Your curiosity is piqued. You want to know more about God. You desire to meet people who can feed that in you.
- Christians call this "study of the scriptures" and "fellowship" and they are marks of a truly converted person to Christ.
- This brings us to our final question: "What happens to a person who is saved?" We'll begin by synthesizing what we have just said.
- First, salvation is a change of position. In theological terms, this is called, "Justification."
- In the mind of God, a legal transaction has taken place and you have been moved from one line or category to another.
- As we saw in Colossians 1:13 that God has rescued us from the Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of His Son. Ephesians 5:8a says "You once were darkness but now you are light!"
- You were once considered sinners only. Now you are sinners, who are saints! You once were dead in trespasses and sins, but now, God has made you alive to Him! (Ephesians 2:1)
- You had been a slave to sin, but are now a slave to righteousness! Listen to Romans 6:22.
•  Romans 6:22  :  "But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life."
- Second, moving from the past to the present, salvation is a change of possession. In theological terms, this is called "Sanctification."
- God has not just transferred you from one place to another only to leave you to figure it out!
- The Bible tells us that God has given us His Spirit to live in and through our lives.
- Turn over to John 16. Jesus announces what will happen after He leaves the disciples.
•  John 16:7-13  :  "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."
- Jesus announced this promise to the disciples and then, 40 days after His ascenscion, the Holy Spirit came, baptizing the believers and filling the church with power!
- He is here to do the same for you, convicting you of sin when you have sinned, speaking to you of things that are right for you to do and giving you the power to discern God's judgments.
- The Holy Spirit comes upon believers (Acts 2), He governs in the church, He fills believers for acts of service and gives power to them so that they might witness!
- When you came to Christ, the Holy Spirit came to live in you and He began a work of conforming your character to Christ!
- Because He lives in you, when you sin, all you need to do is confess, say the same thing that His Word says, and you will be cleansed. (I John 1:9)
- Finally, salvation means that you have a certainty of place! In theological terms, this is called "glorification!" However, it is more commonly known as "heaven."
•  Romans 8:28-30  :  "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified." : Paul tells us that God has been working all along to bring you to Himself!
- Tonight, if you have come to Christ, and His Spirit indwells you, your future is secure because God cannot fail! Every promise that God has ever made, He has fulfilled!
- Turn with me to John 14. Jesus has made a promise to His church that stands to this day and points to this reality.
•  John 14:1-3  :  "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also." :  Jesus ascended to heaven to be our lawyer and to be our contractor! He's preparing a place for us now, so that He can bring us and fulfill every promise to us for eternity!
- That is the glory of salvation! In justification, Jesus has removed the penalty of our sins by becoming sin for us. In sanctification, God's Spirit is removing the power of sin from our lives.
- In glorification, God promises that we will be removed from the presence of sin forever!
Conclusion
- Salvation is such a glorious topic that I can talk about for days. God's love, Christ's obedience and the Holy Spirit's faitfhulness are more than we need to live this life for the Lord.
- I pray that in whatever state you find yourself tonight, whether brand new believer or aged veteran, that His salvation will again lift your heart to His in thanksgiving.
