Resurrection Sunday

“From Unbelief To Unbelievable!” • 4.19.14 • Calvary Christian Fellowship, Resurrection Sunday Service
Intro.
- Jesus Christ, the Son of God, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life and died a sinners death, paying once and for all, the debt that mankind owed to God.
- Whoever believes upon Him, trusts in Him, puts their full weight upon Him, repenting from all known sin, is unequivocably saved, justified by God and set apart for heaven!
- His death achieved what we could never have achieved by our works of righteousness. He satisfied God's wrath against those who would believe forever and ever!
- We know this is the case because this is the testimony of scripture, that which was written or transmitted by the 11 remaining disciples.
- They were men of power and authority, whose pens captured the very thoughts and intent of the heart of God Himself!
- Today, we're going to see that these men were much more like us on the day of the resurrection and their actions are most instructive to us today.
- They were the first to be confronted with the resurrection. How did they respond? Today, you are confronted with the same truth: Jesus Christ has risen from the dead! What are you to do?
- Let's go to the word and discover for ourselves!
Text
• Mark 16:1-4 : "Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they said among themselves, 'Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?' But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large." : I cannot imagine a less restful Sabbath than the one preceding Resurrection Sunday!
- Aside from all of the regulations that had been placed upon the people of God, making sure that they were actually "resting," I'm sure that these women did not stop thinking about Jesus.
- They had seen His broken body and the quick job that had been performed by the men just a day earlier. You can almost hear them thinking of how they needed to care for His body properly.
- But that's just the thing isn't it: Jesus said that on this third day, He would rise from the dead! The very thought that they would minister to the Lord's body was profoundly misplaced!
- These loving ladies may not have had a proper faith, but their love for Jesus meant that they made it their goal to get themselves to the tomb as early as possible.
- Mary Magdalene is mentioned first. She has an interesting back story that is often forgotten.
• Luke 8:1-3 : "Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities—Mary called Magdalene, out of whom had come seven demons, and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who provided for Him from their substance." : In the early part of the Lord's ministry, there was a group of women who had banded together to assist the work of the gospel.
- They had this in common: They had been touched by the Lord Jesus! He had freed them from demonic possession or healed them of infirmities, chronic illness or the like.
- Mary Magdalene had been possessed by seven demons! Jesus touched her life and changed her so greatly, it was nothing for her to take care of Him out of her own "substance!"
- Whatever means these women had and one was the wife of one of Herod's stewards, they committed them to the Lord's work! Mary Magdalene had been doing this from the beginning.
- The other two ladies are mothers of three of Christ's disciples. Mary was the mother of James the Less or the son of Alphaeus and Salome, Zebedee's wife, was John and James' mother.
- These three ladies came with spices, aromatic perfumes that were to be smeared upon the body. Remember, Nicodemus brought a hundred pounds of spices the day of the crucifiixion!
- "Oh, that's just not enough for Jesus!" Their love demanded that it be done just so!
- They came to the tomb, wanting to correctly carry out their loving duty and one of them asked a question that hadn't yet occurred to them: "Who's going to roll away the stone!?"
- A tomb like the one we are talking about today, was cut out of the side of a hill.
- A round stone, about 5 feet in diameter, 2 to 3 feet thick, was placed in a groove cut out in front of the opening.
- Scholars believe that the stone would have been between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds, effectively requiring at least 3 to 4 men to move the stone.
- These ladies were definitely there before anyone else would have been there to help! As they came to the tomb though, they realized that the stone had already been rolled away!
- As a quick aside, isn't this an apt illustration of the worthlessness of worry. Sure they had only spent a few minutes on it, but they were wasted minutes nonetheless.
- Perhaps you'd be willing to take up the challenge of taking a piece of paper and separating it into three columns. In the first column, put in the situation, the second, your fear.
- In the third column, put what actually happened. I'd be very interested to see how many times your fear became your reality! I'd be willing to wager that you'd find the stone moved for you as well!
• Mark 16:5-7 : "And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, 'Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.'" : Remember that this is "0 Dark thirty" in a garden area without artificial light. It's likely that they walked right past this "young man" without even noticing!
- The other gospel records speak of a second angel, though Mark focuses his attention on the one who spoke wearing the long white robe.
- Can you imagine his perspective? Have you ever held onto a joyous secret, watching another struggle while you know the answer will soon be clear because you get to tell it!?
- They came to the entrance and tried their best to peer inside the darkened cave, made darker by the lack of ambient light and that's when they noticed this angel!
- They are out from their normal immovable state! That's the word "alarmed!" They were shocked! The angel now gets to give them the world's greatest news.
- Jesus was crucified and was here, but is not here now! See for yourself and then go tell everyone, especially Peter, where you will see Him next!"
- The angel is making sure that they include Peter, who has been devastated since hearing the cock crow the night before the Lord's crucifixion.
- What a glorious job to have! I proclaim the same thing and you as believers proclaim the same thing: He was in the tomb, but He's not there now!
• Mark 16:8 : "So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid." : Wait, what!? An angel tells you to go tell a great story and you don't?"
- They were there at the tomb! They left as quickly as their legs could carry them, running away like refugees in the night! They quaked with fear and were out of sorts!
- "And they said nothing to anyone for they were afraid!" To be fair, some have suggested that this phrase suggests that they went straightaway to the disciples, not stopping to engage anyone.
- Perhaps that is true, yet it remains a tragic statement, as here we stand today, looking as they did into an empty tomb.
- "How could it be?" "What an amazing thing it would have been to have been there?" "A formerly dead human being, albeit a human being who is divine, was raised from the dead!"
- They had an experience that was undeniable as many of you are having now as the Spirit of God causes your hearts to tremble with amazement at the truth of this story.
- How many will be guilty of the same inaction!? How many will walk away having been freshly reminded of the core of their faith, only to fear something more than to fear the Lord?
- What were they afraid of? Without a doubt, they were afraid of the religious leaders, who held sway over a great many lives.
- The religious leaders were largely responsible for engineering the slaughter of the world's only innocent Man, as well as controlling the general consensus of opinion regarding Him!
- John 9 tells us about an indisputable miracle that occurred to a blind man who encountered Jesus. Everyone knew what happened and the man spoke boldly before the religious authorities.
- But even in a solid case like this, the man's parents did not want to go on record, but deferred all questions to their formerly blind son!
• John 9:22 : "His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue." : If that is how they acted when Jesus was alive, how much more would they have maintained this policy after the Lord's resurrection!
- What else did they fear? The loss of their own reputation. People would talk and think and say things about them that were not complementary.
- What do you fear? Oh to God that you would fear Him and nothing or no one else!
• Mark 16:9-13 : "Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either." : Mary and Salome had exited the area, but Mary Magdalene remained. That's when the Lord appeared to her. Imagine if those ladies had only waited a few minutes more!
- They would have heard from the Lord Jesus themselves! As it was, Mary Magdalene got to have a personal moment with her Lord and Savior!
- It's not said here that she was asked to say anything, but nothing could possibly have stopped her! She openly, loudly provlaimed that He had risen, mourning and weeping!
- What an emotional roller coaster she had been on! Earlier in the morning, she had prepared herself to see Jesus lying there dead. Now she has seen Him alive!
- Friends, here's an example to emulate. She came and saw. That's what the other ladies did. But what is better is that she went and told!
- But again, a curious thing takes place, as she tells the disciples, "those who had been with Him" and they did not believe! What is going on!?
- They had been told by Jesus on numerous occasions that He would die and be buried and rise again! Yet, here they are still sitting around and refusing to believe an eyewitness report!
- Mark adds that Jesus personally appeared in another form to two other disciples who were walking on the Emmaus Road, an account detailed in Luke 24.
- They were walking and discussing what had happened over the weekend. The Sabbath had likely kept everyone away from each other.
- This is their first chance to talk and they are sad. That's when Jesus appears to them in an unrecognizable form.
- Why the change in form? I wonder if Jesus just joyfully wanted them to be encouraged in a different way or to recognize Him as we should, not through appearance, but by His Word!
- That's how they recognized Him. Jesus gave an extensive sermon detailing all of the Old Testament prophecies that He had just fulfilled and they knew it was Him!
- Those disciples went and told but that didn't cause them to believe either! Note the consistent theme of this chapter: Unbelief!
- The ladies came to the tomb in unbelief. They had perfumes for a dead body! The disciples did not believe the initial reports either! Both Peter and John had to come see for themselves!
- Three witnesses, the standard legal corum had been established in Mary Magdalene, Cleopas and the unnamed disciple of Luke 24 and they did not believe!
• Mark 16:14 : "Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen." : These who had the most knowledge, who has the greatest access to Christ, did not believe!
- Jesus rebuked their unbelief and their hardness of heart! How much more would He do that in us!? But they believed in Him? They were faithful to Him! But their hearts were hard.
- What does Christ refer to? What are "hard hearts?" This refers to stubbornness, resistance, an unwillingness to bend in a direction.
- Brothers and sisters, it's the greatest day in history. The Messiah, the Man who would take away the sin of the believing world, has risen.
- Have you received enough knowledge and grace that you are now hardened in the same way as the disciples? Your His child but you have grown stubborn. May you hear His Word to you again!
• Mark 16:15,16 : "And He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned." : This is a remarkable placement, especially given the circumstances outlined in this chapter.
- Fear had stopped the mouths of the two women. Love had opened the mouth of Mary Magdalene! The two said nothing to nobody but nobody could stop Mary from telling everybody!
- The unbelief and hardness of the disciples heart kept them from believing and thus were hardened, stubborn in their resistance to what the Lord' will.
- It's with this context that Mark relays Christ's command to His disciples, the command which remains in effect to this very day!
- Go into all the World, wherever He has placed you, with whatever voice and influence you have. You will not be judged by another's calling, only your obedience to His calling!
- Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature! Don't hold it in. Don't discriminate! Go and tell the world the gospel!
- The Gospel is that Jesus Christ died for the sake of every sinner who would believe. He rose again the third day to prove that every word He said was true! Now go tell someone!
- Here's the promise that's attached: He who believes and is baptized will be saved! The Apostolic church loves to use this verse to prove their pet doctrine of baptismal regeneration.
- However, notice the last phrase: He who does not believe will be condemned, not, He who does not believe and is not baptized! Belief is the issue!
- For the early church, baptism happened almost simultaneously with belief and was the initating mark of a true believer in Christ!
- You don't have to baptize and you don't have to make them believe, but you must by commandment of God, preach, announce, proclaim the gospel!
- May our love for Him grow hot enough and our hearts be soft enough to do just that!
Conclusion
- Let's pray!

Intro.
- I have always been fascinated by predictive prophecy and have considered it a wonder of scripture and confirmation of the Lord's sovereign hand over every event of human history.
- If you took just 8 prophecies about the Messiah, the probability of one person fulfilling all of them would be 1 in 1057 power!
- That would equal the amount that it would take to blanket the state of Texas with silver dollars two feet deep. The chance of you finding your marked one in that mass would be 1057!
- A conservative estimate of total Messianic prophecies rounds out to 48. Jesus fulfilling all of them would be 10157!
- I would have you notice that thread throughout this section. Jesus had said of Himself that "the Son of Man goes as it is written of Him."
- Jesus makes no attempt to avoid it, but willingly takes the direction that His Father set out for Him and then, even after His passing, we'll note the Father's hand continuing to move.
- This section poetically reads like a scriptural tapestry, as the Lord God weaves the threads of redemption, confirming both The Word, Jesus and His Word, the scriptures!
Text
• John 19:28-30 : "After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, 'I thirst!' Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit." : Jesus has just given His disciple John the charge of caring for His mother Mary.
- For all the bravado of the disciples, only a few ladies and John were brave enough to stand near the cross of the Lord Jesus!
- The perfect Man was still a perfect Son, looking out for His Mother's needs even under extreme physical duress. He honored His Mother until the end.
- This charge to John was the Lord's final duty. The task was entirely finished. Every detail had been completed, save one note.
- Our Lord remained on the cross as long as He needed for the sake of that which the scripture proclaimed about Him. That's how important His Word is!
- Jesus needed to utter one final phrase and that in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled. "I thirst!" When Jesus said this, one of the Roman Centurions sitting nearby offered Jesus a drink.
- Sour wine according to our consideration today would be akin to vinegar. The hyssop plant transported the sponge to the lips of Jesus and he drank, fulfilling Psalm 69:21.
• Psalm 69:21 : "They also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink."
- The only other time we see hyssop employed in the scripture is when the Jews used it on the night of the Passover to apply blood to the top and sides of their doors!
- Here, THE Passover Lamb's blood has been spilled, bringing in a new kind of Exodus!
- Having His mouth freshly lubricated, Jesus proclaimed "It is finished!" In the other gospel accounts, the authors tell us that He proclaimed this in a loud voice!
- This was no quiet resignation of life! This was a triumphant exclamation! There is nothing left to be done! All is completed!
- When this word was used in the market place, it meant that the final payment had been made for a purchase! Hear again the Lord's word: "It is finished!"
- When it comes to your salvation, the justification of your soul, the legal transaction in the heavenlies which determines where you spend eternity, for those who believe, "It is finished!"
- Nothing can be added. Nothing is necessary. Nothing will add to the Lord's pleasure to justify you! Jesus has done enough. His work is complete and has satisfied the God of the Universe!
- When it was done, Jesus did not need to spend a single moment more in agony!
- He simply gave up, delivered over His spirit! All breath left His body and His human life was over, the mission to save His people from their sins, complete!
- He surrendered His Spirit, laying down His head in peace.
• John 19:31,32 : "Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him." : On the Jewish calendar, this was a very special day, as it was both a Sabbath and one that directly preceded the Passover.
- Jesus has died at around 3PM and there were a few hours left to finish all works, including purchasing foods, etc. No work would be done once the first star of the evening showed in the sky.
- If the three men were left up on the cross, they would stay there, essentially until Sunday. It's amazing to me to consider how much injustice the religious establishment has just engineered.
- "Oh, but we can't defile the Sabbath!" Jesus said of them that they strained out a gnat, the smallest creature with blood in, but they swallowed a camel! Amazing!
- In order to expedite their deaths, it was the Pharisees that asked Pilate to break their legs so that they could be removed from the cross.
- The legs were the key to staying alive. The gravity of the body would keep the lungs from expanding to full capacity and the victim would simply suffocate.
- The legs could keep a person alive for days! It is reported that Josephus once discovered two friends who were actually on crosses. He begged for their removal and one actually lived!
- The breaking of the legs took away all options. A person without that movement simply suffocated. That's what the soldiers did here, as they broke the legs of the criminals first.
- This was usually done with a mallot, as the soldiers would crush the femur bone.
• John 19:33-37 : "But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, 'Not one of His bones shall be broken.' And again another Scripture says, 'They shall look on Him whom they pierced.'" : When a persons body rapidly loses fluid, the body goes into hypovolemic shock.
- In a trauma experience, such as an automobile accident, the normal pathways of body fluids rush in different directions and can flood both the protective lining around the heart and lungs.
- After He passed, the fluids all compressed in that area and when the soldier pierced him, blood and water came flowing out!
- One has to wonder: He saw that Jesus was dead. Why did He pierce Him? When you are a Roman soldier and you are ordered to break legs and you don't that gets your legs broken!
- On the human plane, this soldier was simply carrying out an order to be sure that Jesus was dead. But there is more to what John is explaining.
- Jesus died a traumatic human death. John wrote to people who believed that Jesus was a ghost or a spirit. Nothing could be further from the truth. He came by water and by blood!
- John tells us that these actions were also fulfilled scripture on both accounts.
- The Lord's bones were unbroken, just as the Passover Lamb pre-figured in Exodus 12 and Psalm 34:19 and 20 predicted.
- When the Lord's body hung there between heaven and earth, those who looked on Him, looked on the One whom they pierced, just as the prophet Zechariah wrote! (Zechariah 2:10)
• Zechariah 12:10 : "And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn."
- For those who look back, we understand that it was our sin that pierced the Lord's heart! Israel will one day see this same vision and know the same truth applies to them!
- They will mourn when they understand the depth of sin that brought about their Messiah's death!
• John 19:38-42 : "After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby." : Joseph of Arimathea had been a secret disciple, living in constant fear of the Jews.
- Mark 15:43 tells us that he was a prominent council member of the Sanhedrin. Matthew 27:57 reveals that he was a very rich man. He had the access to come to Pilate.
- He came and took possession of the Lord's body, along with Nicodemus.
- Nicodemus is the Pharisee who had come to Jesus by night in John 3. He was a renowned teacher, in fact, by the Lord's own words, "the teacher" of the Jews.
- Nicodemus, according to extant sources, was the 3rd richest man in Israel and was purportedly the brother of Josephus the historian!
- It's possible that Joseph brought Jesus down from the cross and that Nicodemus then came with all of these spices, nearly a hundred pounds, and then they both took Jesus to the tomb.
- This was a tomb in a garden area and was a newly hewn tomb which had never been occupied. To have a tomb constructed like this would have been a tremendous expense.
- Hand cut, and according to those who believe that this is Gordon's tomb, large enough for an entire family to be laid there!
- They brought His body and arranged the cloths and linens in the prescribed fashion. They were not mummified but embalmed and perfumed.
- The amount of the spices would have been very expensive, in the neighborhood of $150,000 dollars! The tomb was not the only expensive item here!
- John lets us know that this may not have been the original plan. They did this because of the day that it was and the haste that was now necessary. This was the closest place.
- Let's open to Isaiah 53 in preparation for communion. Allow me to read you the entire chapter as you prepare your hearts to receive communion.
- Did you notice verse 9? "They made his grave with the wicked, but with the rich at his death!"
Conclusion
- What amazing accuracy! What incredible detail! The God of the Universe left nothing to chance and the Messiah went willingly as it was written of Him!
- Surely if He was true to every detail, we can trust that the details lead to this truth: We have been bought and paid for! He has taken our wrath! He has taken away our sins!
- Let's pray!

“What To Pray For A Church” • 4.13.14 • Calvary Christian Fellowship, Sunday Morning Service
Intro.
- In a Roman prison house hundreds of miles away, the Apostle Paul dictates two new letters for two churches, the church of Laodicea and the church of Colosse.
- Hours of thought have gone into the words that have were employed, the tone that was chosen, to meet the need of the hour in that church.
- What better way to begin than with a look into what he had already been praying for them! Yes, he will lovingly correct them, but not before he shares his prayers!
- That's the dominant theme over this first half of chapter 1. We'll examine this section and close with a new prayer list to consider.
Text
• Colossians 1:1,2 : "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ who are in Colosse: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." : Ancient letters were composed on large papyrus scrolls. Unlike our modern letters, the author would identify himself at the beginning.
- Paul penned Colossians at about the same time as he penned Philippians, in the late 50's or early 60's, some 30 years after his own conversion.
- Even while in prison, unable to travel, Paul knew that his Apostolic credentials remained firmly intact. He was imprisoned for preaching Christ's gospel and God hadn't revoked his license!
- He was an apostle, a dignitary of the Lord Jesus, by or "according to" the desire or wish of God. Nobody had voted him in. He had not campaigned for the position. He was divinely appointed!
- As with the Philippian letter, Timothy, Paul's protege and brother in Christ is also mentioned.
- They addressed themselves to saints, holy ones and faithful brethren in Christ who were in Colosse. Holiness refers to being set apart for the Lord, useful for His purpose and plan.
- Every believer in Christ, who has been born again, is a saint without distinction!
- Additionally, they were marked by their faithfulness, their full faith issuing in a reliability in the things of the Lord Jesus. Can something better be said?
- Certainly talent and gifting are honored in the world, but people who recognize they are holy and seek to live out a life of faith that others can count on are worth their weight in gold!
- God seeks out those who will be reliably His, availability trumps ability each time!
- These faithful saints were in Colosse, which is located in Turkey, south of the Maender river, a few miles east of Laodicea and 80 miles from Ephesus.
- The area is well known for natural hot springs which leave carbonate mineral deposits, giving the appearance of a bright white cotton cloud, complete with stalactite formations.
- The locals near the Lycus River valley call it Pamukkale, or "the Cotton Castle."
- Also near Colossae was the Roman town known as Hierapolis, which was a Roman bath town due to the proximity of the hot springs. This was a luxurious locale in ancient times.
- How did a church get there, as there is no specific mention of Paul having gone to Colosse in his missionary journeys? There are several theories.
- Aside from what I have just told you, this entire region encompassing Laodicea, Hierapolis and Colosse was called "Phrygia," an area Paul had visited on his second missionary journey.
- Before then, there were people from Phrygia who were actually present on the day of Pentecost according to Acts 2:10!
- It's possible that those believers went back to Colosse with first hand information about the church's founding and when Paul came, he only reinforced what should further be done!
- Others have postulated that this church came out of the church of Ephesus.
- In any event, Paul speaks to them as he speaks to each of the churches, greeting them in the Lord's grace or favor and peace. He would write the same thing to us as well!
• Colossians 1:3-5a : "We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints; because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven," : At the report of the Colossian church, Paul and Timothy were thankful and prayerful.
- They rejoiced in what God was doing! It was always a cause for celebration that there was a faithful representative of the Kingdom flourishing somewhere.
- They gave thanks to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. They are the same in essence, but are two distinct persons. At the end of verse 8, the Holy Spirit is mentioned as well.
- The word "Trinity" is never used, but the concept is clearly seen yet again!
- Since the very first day that they heard of their faith in Christ and their love for the saints they prayed for them, knowing first hand the challenges that awaited them.
- This alerts us to a few items. First, this was a church that Paul and Timothy did not begin.
- His concern as an apostle gave him the authority to speak to this church regardless.
- The second thing we'd consider is the essential being of this church. A church displays trust in Christ, acknowledging who He is, lifting high His Name as the Righteous One.
- This is our primary goal for existing. We are to examine the scriptures in order to bolster our faith in Christ! The church is an institution that continues our growth in this area.
- You begin your life in Christ by faith. You nurture that faith and in the end, you die in faith! Every year, you grow to trust Him more until you understand that you trust Him alone!
- But a church is not a church if it also doesn't display love for all the saints! One can't love Christ and not love His people!
- "Oh C'mon! It's easy to love Jesus!" However, we know that we love Jesus when His love emanates from us toward those that He loves! And hey, you're not that easy to love either!
- Paul continually prays for them because of the hope, their expectation, laid up for them in heaven. The word "laid up" speaks of a reservation that awaits a person.
- Because of Jesus Christ, the Colossians and the CCFians expect something that is reserved for them, safely kept in heaven for those who trust Jesus!
- Where is that hope discovered? Take a look at the rest of verse 5.
• Colossians 1:5b-8 : "of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, which has come to you, as it has also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth; as you also learned from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, who also declared to us your love in the Spirit." : They had heard of heaven in the word of the truth of the gospel! That's the only message of heaven and hope beyond this world, at least the only one that is true! That's what changed their lives!
- Pay attention on this point, as this is not only a statement of fact, but a very real point of correction for the Colossians.
- They needed to understand that it was THE truth of THE gospel that had changed their lives! We need to remember that as well, when other belief systems wrestle for our allegiance!
- The Colossians saw their lives change because of the gospel, but it didn't stop there! The whole world was hearing it as well!
- Consider this was without the internet, television, radio or smoke signals! The people of that first generation were so radically changed that they couldn't keep it to themselves!
- People who had been saved through Paul's ministry and through the ministry of the churches that God was planting, were preaching it and it was bearing fruit! No wonder Paul was thankful!
- This brings us to the man who was both a beloved fellow servant, as well as a reliable minister. Epaphras was the leader who had brought greetings to Paul on behalf of the Colossians.
- He was the one responsible for teaching the gospel to the Colossians. Someone can learn the gospel from you! Ask the Lord to show you who He wants you to teach!
- Some have suggested that Epaphroditus and Epaphras are one and the same. I believe they were different people.
- Paul calls him "one of you" in Colossians 4:12, a distinction not shared with Epaphroditus and Paul mentions in Philemon 23 that Epaphras was a fellow prisoner, literally a prisoner of war!
- Epaphras was not literally a prisoner with Paul, but he was under compulsion to fight in the same war that Paul was ministering in!
- Paul's words regarding Epaphras are as good of a tribute as anyone could want. He was a fellow servant and a faithful minister of Christ.
- Paul looked at him and saw an equal, a fellow participant in the things of the Lord. There was no rank or privilege that one enjoyed above the other. They both simply served the Lord!
- In the same way, we have different capacities and offices. Some have a greater range of influence, but we are all servants of the Lord, available to please God alone!
- He was also their faithful minister, serving their spiritual needs, praying for them when they were away from one another. Finally, Epaphras was their champion.
- The word "declared" refers to providing clear proof and evidence of something.
- Essentially, Epaphras was bragging about the Colossians and their love in the Spirit, referring both to the love that they had for one another and for those outside the church.
- It was a love that came from the Holy Spirit and worked out in them. Love for Christ and love for His church are the first and greatest proofs of authentic Christian life.
• Colossians 1:9,10 : "For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;" : They were already praying for the Colossians, but their love in the Spirit caused them to go again to prayer!
- Paul and Timothy prayed always and here he says that they do not cease to pray for them! It's one thing to commit to pray once. It's another to never stop! That was their heart for the church.
- This was their habit! Never believe that there is any church health apart from a praying constituency!
- There may not be a functional ability to do a visible prayer meeting during or even before a service, but the commitment to be prayerful over our church does not necessitate it!
- Paul, Timothy and Epaphras prayed in prison! When you pray, wherever you pray, pray for me, pray for each other and pray that the Lord would bring others who need Him here!
- We see that they prayed and what they prayed for. They asked that the Colossians would be filled, liberally supplied with the knowledge of His will!
- "Oh, but the will of God is so mysterious." Is it? Paul calls upon the Lord to give them a storehouse full of that which helps them to discern correctly the desires of God!
- "Oh Lord, help them to know the way that they should walk!" I have found that Christians are less burdened by a lack of knowledge than they are a lack of bravery!
- That's why Paul continues that request, asking for all wisdom and spiritual understanding.
- Wisdom speaks of intelligence and spiritual understanding indicates a flowing together. There must be a skillful application and a spiritual association to circumstances before us.
- There are times when a path seems obvious and the way flows together to bring us to right decisions in Christ. In that way, we are driven toward the things that God desires from us.
- Why is this so vital? It's not an end unto itself. We have this capacity in order that we might walk and to do so worthily, in light of the Lord!
- We've encountered this word "worthily" before. It comes from the Greek word "axios" from which we then get our word "axiom" or "axiomatic."
- There is a necessity to comprehend that our walks with Christ generally coincide with certain behaviors, while others are completely out of place.
- Some actions become or suit a Christian life and others do not! In some instances, those behaviors are quite clear. In others, there is a difficulty in discerning.
- This is why we need His wisdom and spiritual understanding! Walking with God is more than a series of "black and white" decisions!
- There are grey areas that are right for them but wrong for you! Alternately, certain things are off the table for them which you have no problem with!
- When we walk wisely and worthily, we bring God pleasure and are fruitful in what we do!
- Such a life won't just have some of God's knowledge. No, that knowledge will lead to an increasing, correct, experiential knowledge of God!
• Colossians 1:11,12 : "strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light." : Paul prays that they would be strengthened, granted power with all of His power, according to His power!
- It's great to have wisdom and knowledge, but then if He does not grant us the ability to employ that power, what good is it?
- The Christian life is impossible apart from the strengthening resource of God! Perhaps you are wondering why things have been so difficult. You need His strength!
- Why do we need His strength? In order to have patience and longsuffering with joy! "Wait, I thought that patience and longsuffering were the same thing!?"
- The word "patience" refers to our ability to sustain a walk with the Lord despite discouraging circumcstances. Financial strain, family disorder, employment struggles, etc.
- There are discouraging things that we hear about and endure personally as we walk. A patient Christian keeps walking with Christ through them all.
- Patience deals with circumstances, while "longsuffering" has a more personal tone to it. There are people who are coming at you personally, seeking to test the authenticity of your faith!
- They are antagonistic, hoping to break you. The longsuffering Christian never responds with malice or vitriol.
- We need His power to endure both the general discouragement and the personal attacks. Some can do that with a frown, but it's the Lord when they can accomplish these things with joy!
- It's no testimony to endure as an Eeyore in the world! But when your joy is unshakable, there is something that you have that is supernatural!
- We need His strength to endure with joy and still be thankful to the Father! What a beautiful statement: We are thankful to the One who has qualified us!
- He has made us sufficient, rendered us fit, given us power to complete the task! As such we are partakers of what has been set aside for those who are in the light of Jesus Christ!
• Colossians 1:13,14 : "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins." : He has delivered us. He has rescued us! He is our hero because we were under the power, the influence of darkness!
- Our lives were dark, our minds were dark, our eyes were dark. If anyone came to help us, they were stuck in much the same condition! God reached into the darkness and rescued us!
- He rescued us then transferred us into the Kingdom of the Son of His love! We were slaves in the Kingdom of darkness! We're now citizens of Christ's Kingdom!
- It's the Father who did this, through the vehicle of Jesus the Son, in whom we have. Stop there and consider that you have nothing apart from the "whom!"
- Christians have this in Him, not in themselves! In Him we have redemption, a legal payment tendered for the guilt that incurred and the fate we deserved, paid for by the blood that He shed!
- The payment for your soul demands blood. It demands a payment. Sin has sold us over to darkness and those who sin will surely die. That's all of our condition!
- We either accept Christ's payment on our behalf or we spend eternity paying! It's that simple!
- He gave His precious, innocent lifeblood, to secure your place and mine, to grant us the forgiveness of our sin debt! Literally, your sins have been sent away from you!
- Those actions that offend the nature of a holy God have been sent out into the horizon, never to be seen again or acknowledge by God!
